There's a bunch of amazing tuba stuff that many tend to ignore, because it doesn't come from the back of a symphony orchestra - or out the the bell of an F tuba in a university recital hall.

Yep. And quite a number of those I’ve seen on YouTube and Instagram are players from South America with sousaphones doing insanely good playing, dare I say some of the best I’ve ever heard.bloke wrote: Wed Sep 16, 2026 9:51 am There's a bunch of amazing tuba stuff that many tend to ignore, because it doesn't come from the back of a symphony orchestra - or out the the bell of an F tuba in a university recital hall.![]()
It reminds me of how Roland Szentpali was discovered.
Roger Bobo went to Hungary and heard Roland and his friend Tomas playing, and they were only like 16 years old, and playing with tubas held together with bubblegum and tape, and Roger Bobo said, (in the TUBA Journal article about it), playing better than 99% of the professionals out there he’d ever heard on their professional customized tubas. He called the Yamaha Corporation and got Roland and Tomas new Yamaha F tubas. There’s a video called “Roger Bobo Masterclass” on YouTube. It’s in there. The video quality is terrible, though, even for almost 40 years ago on a handheld video camera.
The guy who has the YouTube channel that the video at the beginning of this thread came from, Felipe Bacon, is from metropolitan Sorocaba, Brazil, in the state of São Paulo. He has YouTube and Instagram pages. There’s some great stuff on there.

He is also involved with some pretty fascinating frankentubas built there in Brazil. They really seem to love tubas theregraybach wrote: Wed Sep 16, 2026 11:32 am
