Paul mouthpieces!!

I know a couple of you had been following me on my journey to find (in my price range) forever horns. I have been trying to find an E Flat that was non compensating, 5 valves and actually gets a sound I like. Well, a couple of rabbit hole dives into mouthpieces, and I was extremely lucky. I have an Eflat that is a Frankenstein horn of a King valve set, Miraphone 5th rotor and a Burscher eflat bugle. I have always had fun playing this Horn, but was never really convinced it was something I wanted to hang onto. I took a chance this past month and ordered three different mouthpieces to try. One was an RT 64 to stay in my comfort zone of the past 30 years. The second was a Schilke F mp. Both of these mouthpieces helped with my range, obviously, but really didn’t do much as far as helping me feel comfortable on the Horn. The third mouthpiece was the regular Paul mouthpiece from Robert Tucci‘s collection. This $150 mouthpiece has probably saved me a couple years and a couple thousand dollars in trying to find what I’m looking for. The Horn just absolutely sings and the mouthpiece feels absolutely wonderful. As most everyone here knows and will tell you, every mouthpiece isn’t for every player, obviously, but if you haven’t tried this line of mouthpieces, give it a shot. Absolutely a gamebreaker.

I really like the Paul, but I don’t understand why. If you look at the specs or look at the mouthpiece it seems like a 24AW with a useable rim. It’s very deep and has an enormous throat. Somehow, it manages not to be an air hog, produces a lively and engaging tone with great response down low, and has no intonation quirks (at least for me), even up high. I don’t know how it works, but it does. MM. Tucci and Hofmeir seem to know a thing or two.

In his workshops Andreas promotes to play the lightest and largest mouthpiece possible (maybe I simplify his sayings a bit). He said, he wanted the mouthpiece to be as light as it can get. It also features a very large bore. Btw. the "Paul der Große Pro" is a great piece for a large BBb tuba.

I got the regular Paul der Gross. It works great on my 188. But I still like my RT88 for most band stuff.

The description of a deep funnel cup and a large, open backbore seem to be a less extreme version of what I've liked so much about the Dr. Young design (which is just a straight-up funnel with a completely open backbore).
I might want to give one of these a try, but it looks like the BBb/CC version is only available in euro shank? I wonder if the Eb/F version could work on a contrabass horn as a smaller alternative to the Dr. Young, or if I could potentially modify the shank on the BBb/CC version.

I have that one on my Wessex Eb which is non compensating.
I got it off recomendation of another Wessex owner.
I agree it plays great. I wish I could find such a mouthpiece in SS or Titanium :(
