Extra Bonus Day: 5 vintage tuba mouthpieces

Post by bisontuba »

Extra Bonus Day showcases 5 vintage tuba mouthpieces from the Simonetti Museum:

Conn H tuba mouthpiece, c. 1910
Length Inner Rim Diameter Throat Diameter Cup Depth Shank End Diameter
3.650″ 1.295″ .338″ 1.43″ .536″
Comments:
“H″ text on side. This first type of Helleberg tuba mouthpiece was only marked with an “H” on the cup. Contrast this with the full “Helleberg” marking of the 1930’s Helleberg.

Conn-Helleberg tuba mouthpiece, c. 1930…. used by Arnold Jacobs on his York…different sizes do exist of this piece….
Length Inner Rim Diameter Throat Diameter Cup Depth Shank End Diameter
3.895″ 1.290″ .327″ 1.37″ .533″
Comments:
“CONN – HELLEBERG″ text on side, somewhat rubbed out. This later type of Helleberg tuba mouthpiece was marked with the full “Conn – Helleberg” on the cup. Contrast this with the first style Helleberg, which only had an “H” on the cup.

Dr Young tuba mouthpiece…designed by Dr Fred Young…basically a straight funnel…
Length Inner Rim Diameter Throat Diameter Cup Depth Shank End Diameter
4.84″ 1.375″ .346″ 2.37″ .534″
Comments:
REYNOLDS / DR. YOUNG / MODEL text on side.
This mouthpiece was produced by the Reynolds corporation in the 1960’s in conjunction with Dr. Frederick Young. It is an unusual mouthpiece, in that it resembles a french horn mouthpiece that has been scaled up to fit a tuba.

@bisontuba, thank you so much for putting all these posts together, showcasing the Simonetti collection and also showcasing some of your finds and things. I know I'm not alone when I say I find the historic instruments one of the most interesting parts of this forum. I hope you have more up your sleeve when you've finished with the Simonetti instruments.

I agree with arpthark!

My wife and I look forward to your posts and both of us like vintage tubas! I hope that you find another group of instruments or repeat what you have been doing with the Simonetti Historic Tuba Collection.

thank you,
Mark
