I'm forming a jazz combo and playing around with different instrument ideas. I have a very good bass player who is capable of both excellent bass work and playing melodic lines. I also do the same on tuba.
Are there any groups out there that use both instruments in a jazz Combo? I'm not finding them. Specifically I'm looking for examples where the group is without a chord instrument. I'm thinking we can interweave bass lines and when one of us is soloing melodically the other can maintain the standard bass line, basically making up for the lack of a chord instrument.
The other members of the group would be drums and a horn player. But even that is up for discussion.

Be really different and use a vibraphone as the chord structure. I think it would fit together nicely. Hard to transport though. Keep at it. You'll find something that will work.

Part of what I'm trying to do is also avoid the prolonged setups and take downs. Avoiding pianos, vibes, complete drum sets and such would be great. Also saving space is also good.Grumpikins wrote: Wed Sep 10, 2025 12:27 pm Be really different and use a vibraphone as the chord structure. I think it would fit together nicely.
