There's a reason most large manufacturers stopped trusting Brazilian factories, and thus the price difference. I've seen what comes out of these factories. Work ethic definitely plays a role.
Not looking to argue. But what about the high-priced crap that came out of Conn-Selmer's Eastlake facility over the last 25+ years?
I'm willing to give the HS Musical stuff a chance even if it has issues similar to the Chinese budget stuff of 10 - 15 years ago, and still does today. I should kinda expect some fit and finish issues. But wouldn't surprise me if it still better than the Conn-Selmer stuff made over the last couple decades, and at least they are new, original designs...
The only reason I can think of that parents pay and paid upwards of $1,500 for new Japanese (made in China) brand an American made (no longer) beginner trumpets and trombones is out of sheer ignorance - along with rental and rent-to-purchase schemes.
I'm in favor of free enterprise, but I'm also quite aware of the saying "a fool and his money..."
tubas:
It's hard to find a brand new ~actually~ good tuba - brand new - for much less than $7,500 bucks, and $7500 bucks is going to be a "super deal" type of price for something that's ACTUALLY good.
From building several of my own instruments (yet understanding that there's a certain level of mass production that can occur at factories, but that level is limited), regardless of where it's built, there's a BUNCH of work that goes into building a tuba.
