decent-paying church gig Sunday prompts linkage conversion job

Post by bloke »

I have tons of low-cost, medium-cost, and high-cost customer repair work sitting here (and I NEED the money)...

BUT (considering the title of this thread) I'm thinking about doing that IMPROVEMENT OF THE 5th LINKAGE gig on my 32"-tall B-flat Holton.

(I usually take Fat Bastard to that particular church, but I'd like to test the compact Holton (which offers very high output) there this weekend.

OFF TOPIC:
This church is sort-of in the middle of the Memphis area. We are supposed to be at a party (considerably farther west in Earle, Arkansas) by 1:30.
Church lets out at 12:15.
Mrs. bloke has agreed to drive her bad-paint manual shift car to Memphis, park in front of a friend's (protected by security patrols) nice-area bungalow (a few miles WEST of the church). I'll pick her up at 12:30, and we'll head on to the party in Arkansas.

This last-minute pretty-good-paying gig covers the cost of a bunch of minor thises-and-thats which I've bought over the past few weeks PLUS the cost of the gas to drive these cars on Sunday. (The gas for both of these small/high MPG cars - all together - shouldn't cost more than $30. The gig pays OK - $325.)

I might post a couple of AFTER pics of the linkage alteration, ASSUMING I manage to get it done.

I have no idea what we are playing (nor the instrumentation), and won't know until 7:15 in the morning before the first service.

The only noises I've made on a tuba in the last two months (other than gigs) have been to check repaired school horns.

I ended up having to make a side key for an 100 year old King tenor saxophone today, instead of what I wanted to do (as expressed in the first post).

After that, I didn't feel like using my brain anymore (because it takes a lot of thinking to get all the geometry right when making a saxophone key), so instead I just soldered the bottom rib back onto that five valve piggy that I am fixing up for the local fellow - who probably wants to sell it.

Some plated trumpet throw rings showed up in the mail today that I ordered (incredible price). I needed one small gauge one (King, Blessing, Conn, etc), and on eBay they are three of them for only $10 including the tension screws and including postage. They came in 2 days. I picked up a Martin Imperial trumpet for real low price that someone had silver plated. Those are getting to be pretty popular (as the Handcraft and Committee models have always been popular, and people are discovering that these play just about the same) and it was only missing the finger ring and screw for the third slide. I'm getting ready to flip it.

It's odd how using the brain wears a person out just about as much as using the muscles - if not more (making a saxophone key). Perhaps it's because my brain isn't very powerful. 😐

I really don't like making woodwind keys. 🙄
