A "financial emergency" that I am sure was years in the making and everyone saw coming.
“For years, this institution has operated on a financial foundation that could not sustain it,” said Nashville Symphony President and CEO Mark Cantrell. “The extraordinary generosity of one donor sustained the organization, but that generosity was never a substitute for the broad community support and sound financial stewardship its future requires. Structural deficits persisted, and the necessary changes were not made.”
Sounds less like an emergency and more like a failure to adapt, unfortunately.

The explanation is remarkably simple. I can explain it, but I don't know if anyone's interested.

One super rich lady was footing the bill. I suppose they assumed she was going to live forever, but she did not.

The party's over.

One does wonder how far they fell into the trap of putting all the money into the non-musician staff.

That's not a trap. That is the goal of non-profit corporations.
In fact, that's their unspoken definition of "profit".

I read in multiple sources 27 full-time staff for an orchestra of 77 musicians. Is that typical?

Their endowment is just over $10 million .....not very much. During the years of the wealthy patron, they should have looked long term and not year to year....maybe she left the Symphony some loot....

Boston Symphony did a video where they have 3 music librarians (bigger orchestra but not by as much) which I believe are full time. Many orchestras have an operations manager, personnel manager, those tasked with writing grants, ticket sales, promotion and advancement.

It is hard to compare organization to organization: here is North Carolina Symphony, which is in the same geographical area of the country, similar pay scale (we aren’t talking like Boston Symphony vs. Louisville difference), and I am seeing 42 positions.

https://ncsymphony.org/about-us/our-people/staff/

Kansas City pays less and has 36 non musician staff.

https://www.kcsymphony.org/about-us/administration/

I do not have info on the full time or part time positions. I can only assume at these full time orchestras, positions that have manager or director are more than likely full time.

Its former director, Giancarlo Guerrero, is a terrific musician and conductor. He left last year.

But an orchestra like this needs a Music Director first ( aka fundraiser), then a conductor. Artistic needs are certainly a top priority, but $$$$ keeps the machine running...

If there's a touring European orchestra passing through, I'm more likely to buy a ticket to watch and listen to one of those that stand up the entire time and play entire symphonies from memory. I think that's pretty awesome. (no conductor)

A little bit of an update concerning specifics from a Nashville businessman named Grant Hammond. He seems to know what he’s talking about. Link to his post at the end of this thread comment. I included that for those of you who, like me, love to read the comments.

The Nashville Symphony has officially run out of cash. More than 100 musicians and employees are being furloughed, and most of the season is being suspended.

The numbers are brutal:

• $10 million operating deficit
• 77 orchestra members furloughed
• 27 full time staff furloughed
• 104 total musicians and employees affected
• Season suspended beginning October 18
• Only 29 operational staff members expected to remain working

The Schermerhorn itself is not closing.

Several independently produced concerts, weddings, private events, the Symphony Ball and other events will continue.

And there is still one fascinating unknown.

Martha Ingram, who repeatedly helped rescue the Symphony during her lifetime, was publicly listed as a member of its Legacy Society, meaning she had told the organization she included it in her estate plans.

Ingram died just weeks ago, and her final estate plans have not been publicly resolved.

We do not know what she left the Symphony, how much it might be, or whether any gift could be used for immediate operating expenses.

But after decades of supporting the institution, Martha Ingram may still have one final gift waiting in the wings.

It would be remarkably fitting if the woman who helped save the Nashville Symphony before somehow managed to do it one more time from the grave.

BREAKING: THIS IS A VERY BIG DEAL AND BASICALLY SAVES THE NASHVILLE SYMPHONY.
I told you how the symphony had hit financial hardship and was going to have to cancel much of the rest of this symphony season.
And, it's long-term future was in doubt.
NOW THIS:
Oracle announced today that it is investing $10 million and creating a strategic partnership to help sustain the Nashville Symphony.
The partnership enables the Symphony to reinstate the 2026-27 season along with its full-time staff members and all members of the orchestra who were to be furloughed on Oct. 18 due to a financial emergency...

I'm talking to people who know the unvarnished truth.
I'm told that they've been running irresponsible deficits for years and years and that lady who died had just picked up the pieces every single year and bailed them out.
Just don't misinterpret these comments as being about the musicians. I'm talking about the people who run the thing and who are supposed to be responsible for the finances...
To me it sounds like they've been behaving like children because they've been allowed to behave that way, and for quite a long time
Were I Oracle, I would probably demand replacing at least the executive director and the board, but it's none of my business.
