PT-64-S replacement?

Post by prodigal »

Hello friends,

So, I've been playing the PT-64S that came with my PT-15/5099. The high range is fantastic, but it feels really "mushy" to me in articulation. I'm used to rather sharper inside edges on my mouthpieces, and larger ones (my dentist says that I have room for 36 teeth in my big mouth.) I used to play a PT-36 on the borrowed Symphonie, which now I feel was too big, but I was a kid with chops that were made of steel back then.

Any ideas for something that can keep the high range, but offer a little more foundation in articulation?

Thanks!

PT-65(S) has a little bit sharper inner edge which might help. I used one for years with my B&S F tuba.

I have an older PT 64 that is on loan to a student, and owned a PT 65 before that. They both seemed to have a semi-modified C4 cup, the PT 65 I think had a larger throat and a sharper rim.

If you like that, I would recommend to try something like a GW MMVI Baer, which uses a C4 style rim with a sharp inner rim and a different throat, or try a modular system. Bloke's Solo mouthpiece is a C4 cup and has 3 exit bores and a ton of rims to choose from. I thought the Chi-Brass Floyd Cooley was a VERY good, similar mouthpiece to some of those mentioned--it was quite good. The Laskey K series might be something to consider though I have never played it. The Bobo Symphonic might be worth checking out—the rim might be a bit more rounder than you like but I find the articulations to be crisp.

Something I would like to note--when talking to a few people about these mouthpieces, I think Robert Tucci did some very slight changes to the mouthpieces from the Perantucci models that make them play better and more consistent.

Try a PT or RT 65. They’re fairly cheap.
