Re: Good price for 1/16" 60/40 Solder
Any solder works, I mostly use 50/50 and 60/40 but they're mostly interchangeable. I would stay away from plumbing/lead-free solder but it works in a pinch, just takes higher heat, and it's more readily available.MShores wrote: Tue Sep 29, 2026 9:57 am So if I wanted to learn/practice basic soldering, I need 60/40 solder and what kind of flux?
I started out using Ruby Fluid flux which is liquid and easier to deal with (for me) than paste flux. You can get it at Ace Hardware.

I'm the opposite, I've found paste flux easier to work with. I use liquid only if I need to get some more in there one I've started. With liquid flux, I just get solder everywhere, it seems. The paste seems to help me keep the solder where I want it.

On that note, @MShores, I have about sixty billion junk trumpets for parts if you want one to mess around with. I’ll actually be in Lexington next month for a wedding and can bring one if you want (no meeting at the Bowling Green Buc-ees this time, unfortunately!)

Re: Good price for 1/16" 60/40 Solder
Bought a whole bunch of stuff yesterday, including some of this solder.
My roll of 50/50 thin solder is finally running out. It's actually a little narrower than 1/16", something like 1.2mm or so.
I bought some 1/16" 63/37 eutectic solder sold by a stained glass shop to replace it, but I'm finding that's not as useful as I was hoping since it doesn't have a "pasty" stage. It's great for things like braces and things like that, but for things that need a little wiggling/fooling with, I'm finding it harder to deal with.
