Thanks, Daniel!

For the benefit of our North American members, I fed the site through an online translation service. Google Translate did not work, but this one did:

https://translated.turbopages.org/proxy ... -ich-meine

That's a nice march, and very well performed. Here in the States we don't hear many German marches- I think "Alte Kameraden" (Old Comrades) is probably the most popular, and maybe "Radetzky" as well. More, please!

Radetzky is Austrian -- don't step on any European toes, now!

The conductor of the band I just joined on tuba is German. We are playing a LOT of German music!!!
And the band is also going to play at the opening of the new German restaurant here, on the 10th of Oct., play an hour, be fed for an hour, play another hour. I wonder if the entire band will be slightly drunk -- and we have been told that only German music will be played. Should be interesting. Band is also going to Germany next summer for a couple weeks. (not me, can't do that kind of traveling.)

Sounds like a great time!

For those not familiar, here's "Alte Kameraden". Opinions differ on the way Rieu stages his concerts, but there's no doubt it's an excellent performance:

Personally, I enjoyed it.

Anything is better than editing out the instrumental tracks of old movies and playing along, or playing along with video games, YET (sadly) those concerts sell out in the US.

I think in many ways I would be more culturally compatible in parts of Europe, but the time window for trying to do that is past. Our tuba friend in Portugal doesn't post much any more. Maybe the Borg got him.
I know someone else who moved to Portugal and likes it, says it is considerably less hurry-up-and-go than anywhere she has lived in the USA.

OTOH, much of the music on those soundtracks was played by professional orchestras. A surprising number of folks don't realize that.

Some time ago, pre-pandemic I believe, there was a sci-fi convention in (IIRC) Atlanta, and the local symphony orchestra came and performed selections from those movies. It went over quite well- those attending were hearing the music in a whole new light, especially since 1960s and 1970s movie sound tracks didn't have the quality we have now. I looked but couldn't find it on YouTuba, it might not be on there anymore.

I've been reading this thread and just scratching my head about it ... What is this "Sun of Germany" March? What is the German title of the march that has "Sun of Germany" as its translation into English? I can't make any sense of that. :smilie6:

It seems to be Latin (Sol Germaniae) but Daniel helpfully linked it above in the fourth post of this thread.

Yeah, it was obviously Latin, and I couldn't see a connection to any German march -- or figure why it would have a Latin title.

I finally just found this full description of the connection:

Sol Germaniae (https://www.reichsbanner-geschichte.de/ ... /titel-1-3)

So it seems that the Latin title for it came from the Third Reich's fixation with its own comparison to the Roman Empire in various respects.

Google Translate worked on this site:

https://www-reichsbanner--geschichte-de ... r_pto=wapp

Actually, it was the other way around. Herr Kuhn originally gave it the Latin title, and it was translated to the German after his 1929 death.
