My 26/27 orchestra season starts next week

Post by bort2.0 »

The entire fall, Mozart's Requiem.

Guess I will see them all around jingle bell time.

I was asked back to the regional community orchestra. I'm in a similar boat to you, but not quite as sparse. The only thing on the program with tuba is Grieg's Norwegian Dances, which has tuba on mvts. 1 and 4. I am attending one rehearsal, the dress, and the concert.

Heh: my old orchestra in NL used to have extended Stockhausen festivals. And they wondered why attendance plummeted. :eyes:

To be honest, I recently started a new job and I'm also back in grad school (again, and perpetually),so I'm pretty busy this fall anyway.

It's a shame Mozart hated the tuba so much though. Not even one note!

What, you mean the patrons didn't go home whistling the tunes? Or screeching them, as it were?

I recently checked out a score of his In Freundschaft for solo tuba. It's a trip, for sure.

He couldn't even throw us a bone with a concerto for serpent. Can you believe that guy?

Also, good luck!

I lucked out this year. 4 out of 5 cycles I'm on at least half the program (including a rare on-everything cycle to start).

The 5th I don't know the rep yet (we do a youth concerto competition every year and decide the rest of the rep just before the cycle starts)

I've been to Mozart's geburtshaus in Salzburg and have aired my grievances in person.

I did play some Mozart horn concerto on tuba back in high school though. It wasn't perfect, but I think I did pretty good. Well enough to make me think I wanted to be a music major.

One composer that developed a dislike for the tuba was Sibelius. What I was told was that the tubist in the Helsinki Orchestra at the time was not very good, frequently drunk, and always obnoxious. Apparently, Sibelius got so fed up with dealing with him that after his Second Symphony he just stopped writing tuba parts. Symphonies three through seven have only the three trombone parts.

Interesting.

Finlandia was written between his 1st and 2nd Symphonies, so that fits with this as well

We play the three trombones parts version a couple of years ago. The first player played alto trombone, the second player (with the tuba Mirum thing) played. their B flat trombone, and I played the f cimbasso. I sat right next to the second bassoonist..a very competent player with a $75,000 bassoon (at least based on my knowledge of the cost based on the vintage and features).

It was a lot of fun, the two of us had almost everything together, and basically sounded like one instrument.
