For those of you who bought those BIG-ARSE stands (which are advertised as "portable") why?
They're no more "portable" than tossing a Manhasset 48 in the back of your vehicle, and - hey - you don't have to assemble a Manhasset.
You know, my huge-ass tuba, Fat Bastard, is "portable", but (well...) if I'm going to have to supply my own stand, when toting it (along with Fat Bastard) I need it to be UNNOTICEABLE.

but bloke, a KM101 probably won't support my band's folder with 177 tunes in it, because of the 101's narrow shelf.

When I encounter similar situations, I'll put such a folder UNDER MY CHAIR, pull out the tunes to be performed or rehearsed, and ONLY set those on a stand's shelf - REGARDLESS of the width of a music stand's shelf.

OK, I'll bite.....

If you wanna use the skimpy KM101 wire stand on gigs, then that's your choice. I use my skimpy Hamilton wire stand for home practice; on spare occasions for gigs. Mostly use my Manhasset Voyager for gigs. The Voyager may be big and kinda heavy, but much better built than any wire stand. And it has the bag you can put stuff in, including plexiglass sheets you can use for outdoors. Also, the Voyager has stand extenders (Stand-Outs) for multiple-page tunes so you don't have to scurry for page turns/flips.

So why the Voyager? A 48 is cheaper and it takes up the same space, and you can steal a 48 from a school or a church. (Wealthy schools discard them and buy new ones when young scholars scratch $HlT or FV₵K into them.)

Heck yes I'm going to use a small music stand if I have to tote it. Again, I'm just not I'm going to haul any more crap than I have to. The venue (or the ensemble) is supposed to have the music stand.

You've been reading a little bit about me playing in this oldies combo and playing bass guitar again after all these years. When I get to the venues at which we play, guess what? There's a chair, there's a music stand (Manhasset 48), there's a set list, there are the charts for the ones that need to be read, there are earbuds for when we play along with enhancing tracks, and (guess what else?) there's a damn nice Hercules bass guitar stand (the one with the grips that automatically open and close) sitting there waiting for my guitar to rest on it. There's also an extension cord in place for my amp.
(That's why the band leader gets paid more than the rest of us.).

Hey, I'm bringing an amp with a 15-inch speaker (formidable), a bass guitar in a hard case with a premium grade phone jack cord or two, and (more than half the time) a tuba as well. That's enough mess to drag out of my car and set up.

I keep a KM101 (not some Hamilton crap. nor some Hamilton knockoff crap) in two different vehicles. They are very compact, but they're anything but flimsy (notice the design). I play very few gigs every year where I'm asked to bring my own stand. Most of those are nursing home gigs. Any other ones, I'm usually just a little put off when I'm asked to bring a stand. About 80% of the time for those that aren't nursing home gigs, I have to go back to the car and get my stand, because (again: being just a bit put off) I didn't bother to remember.

I’ve had my Manhasset 48 since 2000, and though I’ve had a couple orchestral gigs where I have had to have a stand (orchestra uses school or churches to rehearse and other venues to play until they can bring their own stands), when doing quartet polka, I have to bring it, and it isn’t a hassle.

When I do outdoor gigs, having the steady base to not blow away is imperative. I know some folks that use the iPad set up that have a special stand that holds the iPad and might even charge it (?).

I use the Voyager after many forays into other things. I have a couple of very nice foldables that I got at a thrift store for like $2 each, and they are wonderful IF you are a) not in wind; b) are not trying to put one of those heavy black music-holding folders for a concert, which they won't hold. And if you put white music on one of those wire stands, it shows up and does not conform to the expected look. And yes you can put stuff in the case with the Voyager, which is helpful.

I own a Peak, which is too much hassle to use, and of course a couple of 48s, which are perfect for use at home. But carrying a 48 (sometimes in the wind, making it a big sail) along with a tuba and the other stuff I need for a tuba, nope. I now have the Red Hoggin Vahggin that is so much easier for me than in and out of a case, and in my dotage I have succumbed to making it as easy as possible to get it where it needs to be, which now requires more effort than it used to.

Yeah I know it was a troll but I have nothing else to do this morning.

I have a couple of pieces of short rope (about the size of clothesline) with a spike (like a house gutter spike, not a railroad spike) that I use if I have to play outdoors in the wind (which is a stupid type of situation). Those are slipped just over the base and jabbed into the ground a 45° angles.

(Basically) a wind sail - like a Manhasset - is going to catch wind a lot easier than something that's not much wider than wire (with huge spaces for the wind to blow through it, and very little to catch the wind) - but when a person starts setting a folder on the wire gauge stand, that's going to catch the wind nearly as bad as with a Manhasset.

That said, since both of them become wind sales when there's a folder sitting on them (though I usually only set one piece of music or two on a folding stand), given the choice, I'm going to pick the music stand that folds up to about the size of the super compact umbrellas (particularly considering how well made a 101 stand actually is...a lifetime stand).

b) The big band I play bass with has a book of 175 tunes. It's in a 3" binder. I need a hefty stand for it.
c) It actually is easier to fit in my 2-door Jeep Wrangler than a Manhasset.

I've already explained why I use the Voyager on gigs; not explaining again.

The little KM101 you crave so much looks no better than the Hamilton, except for maybe a little more adjustability.
Otherwise, looks just as skimpy.....

We're kind of stand agnostic - whatever's handy and works.
We've have 7 or 8 of the Manhasset 48s for at-home, and my wife & daughter favor taking those.
We've also got large deck Vekkia, Voyager, Hamilton, & Peak portables. If I need multi-page & a sturdy writing surface & it's indoor, I'll take the Voyager and a flyout or two. For a taller height and steel deck to use magnets, the Vekkia's good.
Usually, out of convenience/laziness, the KM101 is sufficient to my needs, and I bought a 48-pack of small-but-powerful refrigerator magnets off of Temu for ten bucks or so that are small enough that I can leave a half dozen stuck to the stand; come in handy.

I grew up back packing and bicycling, so I was always into efficiency and lightweight gear. I heep a K&m very much like the 101 in my bag that goes to gigs. It holds the music I need to play at the moment. I also have a Mahassett and a Peak, but I carry and use the K&m.

I have a number of light and compact tbone stands, but I carry the Aida because it's light and it works. The carbon fiber Wood Wind Design is light, but hard to use. K&m and Hercules have ones that fit in the bell, but they are impossible to set up quickly and securely.

Anyway, +1 for efficient stuff that works.

A Manhasset 48 stolen from a school or a church is obviously portable, because someone portabled it away from the school or the church.
The question is, "To what point are people willing to define 'portable' down?"
Fat Bastard in its Jakob Winter case weighs about 70 lb, but it's still portable.
When I look at those things that Manhasset came up with which take up just as much space and weigh as much as a 48 - but people purchase them as "portable" stands because they have a portable stand type of product name, my hat's off to Manhasset for the marketing job.

Hey. I have two Manhasset 48ths in the room where I play my instruments, I didn't steal either one of them, but I don't know where the hell they came from, and that's the absolute truth.

We had a gig yesterday where we were supplied Manhasset stands. Because of the thickness of the book, pages can droop off the edge of the stand. Our bandleaders son-in-law 3D printed shelf extenders for all of us. It made a huge improvement.

Those are nice, and he did a really good job on those.

In the past I've had some of those old Sherman tank-like gray metal Manhasset stands from the 1950s (which they couldn't afford to make today, and which had a super wide shelf) I've had those thick 18 piece big band books slide off of those just because of how big they are and how top heavy those books tend to be.

What I've done in the past is (as I said earlier) taking the charts out of the book (even if the book is put together like what you are showing us) and putting them up on the stand separately... whether it's a Manhasset 48 (supplied by the gig or the venue) or my 101.
