Re: Tuba girls
odd (or so it seems to me) ...
Facebook sites - occupied by tuba-playing virtue signalers - loaded up with pictures of women holding tubas, yet WITHOUT the women's names (nor were they teach or go to school or whatever) even being included with the pictures.
I got tired of seeing that stuff in my feed, and blocked the sites.

I assume anything of Facebook is fake or an attempt to get me to subscribe to porn. So by that logic they are not real tuba girls.

Re: Tuba girls
I suspect the pictures are real. They're not beauty queens, but just posting a picture of a random woman or girl with a tuba with no name and no story is sort of pandering, if not sort of dehumanizing (ie. "Here's a picture of a tuba-woman, because I'm pro-tuba and pro-woman"gocsick wrote: Tue Jul 21, 2026 6:18 pm I assume anything of Facebook is fake or an attempt to get me to subscribe to porn. Show a picture of an identified individual... someone who does things, achieves things, and has opinions, and not merely displayed anonymously photographically due to their apparent gender.
I guess, in a way... Those pictures sort of are that word that you used, but not in a way that most people define the word.

Re: Tuba girls
There is one group that has a VERY similar title of one with 17,000 or more actual tubists in there that I was added to that seems to (and that has a lot of members from the community) randomly post pictures of female tubists holding tubas as you mentioned along with what seems to be AI images. Some of the people I recognize because they are my age and the pictures are data-mined and are of the people when they were in undergraduate.bloke wrote: Tue Jul 21, 2026 5:44 pm odd (or so it seems to me) ...

The founder of the group seems to have ZERO mutual friends with me (and other tubists I have asked). I find this REALLY hard to believe with anyone networked at all in the tuba world seems to have at least 2 or 3 somewhere (or somewhere in the "people you may know"). It is the same thing with the other moderators (last time I checked) So, either the profile is someone that is an AI created, or there is some disgusting person running the group. I think I hid the group from algorithms to only when a friend posts a legitimate tuba/euphonium related question.

Re: Tuba girls
Since I started playing the tuba back in 1969 I’ve played with plenty of girls/women who played the tuba. I currently play with 2 and a former female from my section went on to head a Grammy Awarded HS music program here and is the new conductor of one of the groups I play in. One of my good buddies who was a tuba player in the Armed Forces for 28 years started out playing the flute even though his own mom was a tuba player - she was stilling playing into her 80 with three tubas. I ended up with her music stand when she passed.
I’ve never been in a program or group that discouraged females from playing the tuba and size has never been an issue. We had a female Inuit marching a sousaphone in my college band and it would be a stretch to say she was 4’9” and similarly I remember another sub 4’10” girl back when I was down at U of I’s summer music program. I find these virtuous signaling folks nothing more than phony’s - it’s more about letting everybody know how they hold the moral high ground without actually demonstrating anything of substance in support of that. The true mark of acceptance is when nobody points it out and makes it seem like a female succeeding at being a tuba player is somehow the exception to the rule or that anybody would expect them to. It’s like when I hire somebody - I don’t care what you are - I just care that you're competent, show up to do the work & respect the client and co-workers. Everything else is unimportant.

Re: Tuba girls
When I started playing tuba (after many years on trombone) my first teacher was female and many years later I had some female tuba students between 9 and 60 years old. But it never occured to me publishing pictures of them (neither I do with my male students). Over 20 years of tuba teaching about 1/3 were girls. With trombone or euphonium it"s 1/2.

Re: Tuba girls
I had a number of female tuba players when I was teaching, and unlike the guys, every one of them was a very good player. When I first got to my last job some 40 years ago, the band program had a total of 2 tuba players, one in high school and one in jr. high. Of course, the 2nd bands at both levels had none. We were getting ready for marching contest, and in our classification, one Sousaphone made us look like a joke, so I put out a call for tuba "holders" just to make it look better. Three of our female flute players immediately volunteered and not only held, but learned to play the horns. They did such a good job that they became far better tuba players than flutists. They proclaimed themselves the "cool people", and they were.

Re: Tuba girls
My wife was a bassoonist throughout high school (still plays), switched to voice concentration in college and is a wonderful music teacher...
BUT!
She played baritone in high school marching band, and currently subs on tuba when her school district's band needs an extra tuba player for events like commencement or the school convocation. She plays tuba maybe twice a year, but that counts. So, I agree with @gocsick!

Re: Tuba girls
Also, I am building a storage shed in my back yard to accommodate extra things from my shop that are taking up room in my workspace. I went to town hall for a building permit. The lady behind the counter asked what the purpose was, and I joked, "It's mostly to hold tuba cases!" and she said, "Oh, you're a tuba player? Me too, and I'd love to play again, but I have a Miraphone 186 with a really sticky first valve." I gave her my contact info if she ever wanted me to take a look. I said she could always just find my shed permit file if she needs my address. A connection was made in the town building permit office that day!

Depends on how many body parts you are missing -- I'm an "it" as of age 45. I think if you are only minus a gall bladder, you're still technically female.

Re: Tuba girls
You probably only read my most recent response, and not my earlier one.
EARLIER, I discussed pictures of (either) anonymous (ie. "here's a picture of a woman holding a tuba...never mind who they are, or what they've achieved") and/or AI (computer-generated pictures of) women (holding tubas) posted relentlessly on a particular tuba-related social media page.
I personally view pictures such as those as demeaning (ie. "a woman" vs. "a PARTICULAR INDIVIDUAL who happens to be a woman").
Not everything is political.
My comment was not political.
It SIMPLY referred to REAL (ie. people who actually EXIST) people vs. computer-generated people.
That said, I have no control over how anyone else chooses to (mis-)interpret my remarks.
That said,
All we have here are typed words. We neither have vocal inflections nor facial expressions to go with the words, whereby it becomes very easy to misunderstand others' words - and certainly if the other person's (tangentially-related) views on some topics may not completely overlap with our own.

Re: Tuba girls
Not sure why you posted a picture of yourself in a female tuba thread, but oh well. Why are you not holding a viola?
