WTB: Dr. Fred Young Style Mouthpieces (Reynolds, or Unbranded)

Post by MartinMan »

Regarding my recent post on the main forum on my recent experience with a Wessex Dr. Young mouthpiece: https://www.tubaforum.net/viewtopic.php?t=14565

I am now looking for an additional mouthpiece(s) of that style so that I can have a backup to my current one as a safeguard.

As long as they are in playable condition, the manufacturer/era/material is less important.

I'd wager that there's a few folks out there who have one in their collection as a curiosity/conversation (mouth)piece, but I fully plan on getting these things out of the parts drawer and actually plugged into a horn, so if you've got one with no intention of ever playing it, please consider the chance to clean out a little extra space in the drawer and make a few bucks in the process.

Willing to offer the following mouthpieces in trade/trade+cash:

-Perantucci PT-50 (silver, good condition)
-Stofer Gieb (silver, fair condition)

The listing for these mouthpieces is here: https://www.tubaforum.net/viewtopic.php?t=14587

Sincerely,
The weirdo who actually likes how these things play :tuba:

Hi MartinMan,

I played on a Reynolds Dr Young for more than a year. It is an intriguing mouthpiece design. But I had to push a lot of air thru it to make it sing, and articulation was sloppy. To understand those two shortcomings, I machined a series of mouthpieces of the Dr Young design -- some of nylon, some of raw brass, some of stainless steel -- making systematic changes in design parameters. Eventually I bracketed the parameters that rectified those two problems (for me). In short, the Dr Young throat is too big (hence, too much air) and the radius of curvature of the rim bite is too big (hence, sloppy articulation). I sometimes use the best (for me) "Dr PRO" mouthpiece in concert, with good results.

Feel free to contact me at proscientific@verizon.net.

*UPDATE*

I reached back out to Wessex and was able to purchase a second NOS YOUNG1 mouthpiece, so I'm no longer looking for an additional Wessex example HOWEVER, I am still looking for on original Reynolds example and/or any other unbranded variations of the design.

Thanks!
