Re: WTB: Gold brass and upright bell for Conn 24j
Just to clarify, since I've never seen or heard of a Conn 2xJ bell made out of anything except lacquered (or stripped to raw) yellow brass or silver plated brass: do you mean a bell with higher copper content, like 80/20 copper/zinc?

Perhaps he's referring to the kanstul reproduction bells for the 2xj which I believe were offered in the different alloys kanstul marketed.arpthark wrote: Thu Jun 25, 2026 3:39 pm Just to clarify, since I've never seen or heard of a Conn 2xJ bell made out of anything except lacquered (or stripped to raw) yellow brass or silver plated brass: do you mean a bell with higher copper content, like 80/20 copper/zinc?
Either way I wish him luck on his ambitious price for a conn 2xj upright bell and a recording bell.
I went to Portland twice for 2 different 21js and I had to spend more than that just to buy the whole horn for the bells.

I believe Lee Stofer had an upright bell for 3k with case a few months ago.ThatStrangeTuba wrote: Thu Jun 25, 2026 11:00 am Hi! Re: WTB: Gold brass and upright bell for Conn 24j
I own the last upright bell that Kanstul made for 2xJ series. It is in perfect condition. A beautiful bell that produces a lovely pure "ringing" tone (just like a bell !!!) when held gingerly at the bell tenon with one hand and rapped lightly with a knuckle of the opposite hand. I use it with my 27J for some orchestra work. Conductors like it, presumably because it is big and shiny.
This Kanstul bell turned out to be an excellent bell and worth what I paid the former owner. For reference, the purchase price in 2019 was much much more than $800. Note prices and shipping costs have gone up considerably since then.
I encourage you to keep searching. As to your price range -- who knows, you could always get lucky.

Hi Jose, I found a good high-res photo. However, my elderly computer (Win7) misbehaves with DropBox and similar photo sites. I will see whether a friend can post the photo for you. Please standby. Thanks for your patience. Paul.

I'm trying to build something similar with a Chinese valve set.
Re: WTB: Gold brass and upright bell for Conn 24j
I think yours is a worthy endeavor. Please keep us posted on your progress.
If you are planning to use short-action valves, who is the manufacturer and could you provide a link?
By the way, in the photo, that large disk near the mouthpiece receiver is not attached to the instrument nor to the stand. It is a plastic star map that is resting on some books in the bookcase behind the horn.
Also, I used a short piece of brass to offset the fourth valve button toward my hand, for better fit of valves to fingertips. Easy peasy.

I already own the tuba. I am just looking for the bells itself. I love the sound of gold brass and it would be phenomenal to have that sound on the beast of the Conn.

I’m just looking for the bells. I love of the massive sound of the Conn. I just want to improve and enchance mine with a new bell. Considering how darker gold brass is, it’d be phenomenal on a ConnPRO wrote: Fri Jun 26, 2026 7:19 am I own the last upright bell that Kanstul made for 2xJ series. It is in perfect condition. I wish you good luck
Yes, it would be cool.
I had a 20J for a while and wanted an upright bell too. I borrowed a non-original quasi-homemade/adapted upright bell, and it was neat. Very top heavy. Ended up selling my tuba. It was neat, but overall, not worth the effort.

It's going to use the 19mm valve section from jinbaoPRO wrote: Sat Jun 27, 2026 9:53 am I think yours is a worthy endeavor. Please keep us posted on your progress.

We're using the same style valve set as the one art hovey used in his 20j conversion. http://galvanizedjazz.com/tuba/20J/20Jconversion.html
I purchased a pair of silver 20ks as an alternative for the valve sections and I have a Yamaha fiberglass sousaphone im willing to cannibalize to finish the project since jinbao sent the wrong tuba the 1st time and I'm growing impatient.

Re: WTB: Gold brass and upright bell for Conn 24j
I like the 20j/21j sound too. What I'm saying is that you'd be lucky to find someone willing to part out a 21j to sell you the bell. I had to buy the entire Horn twice which is how I ended up with 2 21js.ThatStrangeTuba wrote: Sat Jun 27, 2026 10:42 amjose the tuba player wrote: Thu Jun 25, 2026 3:59 pmPerhaps he's referring to the kanstul reproduction bells for the 2xj which I believe were offered in the different alloys kanstul marketed.arpthark wrote: Thu Jun 25, 2026 3:39 pm Just to clarify, since I've never seen or heard of a Conn 2xJ bell made out of anything except lacquered (or stripped to raw) yellow brass or silver plated brass: do you mean a bell with higher copper content, like 80/20 copper/zinc?

@jose the tuba player I’ve played that 20J conversion of Art’s. He sold it to a guy in the Coast Guard Band. Cool horn! I think it turned out well.

Project is on hold. Many things didn't line up. Not on my end....arpthark wrote: Sun Jun 28, 2026 8:06 am @jose the tuba player I’ve played that 20J conversion of Art’s. He sold it to a guy in the Coast Guard Band. Cool horn! I think it turned out well.
I guess people would rather mess with woodwinds all day than get paid their shop rates for tuba work. I spent 7 months waiting with no concrete timeline so I pulled the plug. The jinbao donor tuba arrived last week too.
