painting a (brass) sousaphone a color...

Post by bloke »

I sold my fiberglass King that I fixed up really nice for myself.
(I bought something else - not a tuba - and didn't want to pull money out of the bank to buy that other thing.)

In the meantime, I've rounded up everything I need to build a BRASS King sousaphone, but I don't want to buff and lacquer it.

I don't like flat black sousaphones, I don't wish to paint it white...
I don't like bright-colored sousaphones, I'm done with super-attention-getting colors on them.

I HAVE a few cans of BRONZE FAUX HAMMER-FINISH RATTLE CAN PAINT.

It actually looks much MORE REALISTIC than this picture:

(your thoughts? Some parts are silver plated, and some are lacquered...I'd strip the lacquered parts and just spray the entire instrument with this...

POSSIBLY, I might do SMOOTH/SHINY bronze TINTED lacquer on the bell interior, slides and offsets (which would require buffing on those areas ONLY)...I DO HAVE some Nikolas bronze TINT for their 2105 clear lacquer.

Is this guy still around? Wouldn’t you want your horn to have, “That sensational ‘55 Look?”

You know my views on that. I'd say go ahead and paint it :smilie7:

Okay, but how would it affect the sound?
...and could I undo any negative characteristics brought on by using this paint with one of those heavy mouthpieces? What about heavy ambronze...??? or heavy double gold-plated ambronze...??
