Home Depot Find...

Post by tubatodd »

I went to Home Depot to pick up a gift card and across from the gift cards I saw something quite interesting. It was an extra large thick plastic tote. My first thought was "bet I could fit a 6/4 tuba in there." It has wheels, a handle and even spot for putting locks or some other security latch. I could see maybe putting a tuba with a gig bag in it with other things and toting it around. I don't know. Perhaps impractical....perhaps useful. It just captured my interest for its potential. What do y'all think?

Waaay back on this forum there was a guy with a MW 182 F who took a wheeled garbage can, form-fitted his tuba with expanding foam, and used it successfully as a flight case. Round does make a bit more ergonomic sense than square, but for just hauling around, this is probably more secure than a wagon, although a collapsible wagon perhaps fits in the car better.

Interesting...
Yeah I saw this as having some useful potential. Not sure the wheels are all that great but it's a start.

What if you put that expanding packing foam in the bottom with a wax paper layer? Then lay your tuba in a garbage bag on top so that it molds to the contours. The result SHOULD be a molded case. Then do the same for the top side. Not sure the shelf life of that type of shipping foam, but it could work. For those with $100 and a DIY spirit, you could create something interesting.

You should totally take a horn down there for a fit check and let us know. I’ve done this a couple of times - once to Academy where I found a canvas duffle bag that fits this ancient Eb bass saxhorn I have, and another time to Target looking for something to haul the body (or “carcass” as I think of it) of my 1928 recording Martin to gigs in. I don’t think anyone even looked at me twice.

I have been using a Husky rolling tool bag for years for my 6/4 York. Carries everything I need as well. It is made of canvas. It don't like train tracks.
