Maybe a high pitch instrument and more accurately a D...?

I thought that instrument might be a euph, but if you zoom in on the original picture you can see that his music is marked Basses and goes down below the staff, in bass clef. Plus, the horn seems fairly wide in the body and bell throat.

Tagging @bisontuba as this seems up his alley.

I was just making a wise crack about the first valve being depressed... and you apparently picked up on it.

I'm wondering if it was a complete set of pictures of which this is one, and prompted by a bunch of brand new uniforms and brand new instruments. Both look quite fresh in the picture.

Notice the long hair...typical young musicians with their loud pop music. I think they were a bunch of hippies or something...

I don’t know, to me the mustache leans more toward hipster, which is worse on so many levels. :smilie8:

Yeah, but I’m still betting the band went out for PBR’s and avocado toast after the photo shoot.

This picture is so crisp and clear that I can actually see it's just a painted backdrop behind him! Turn-of-the-century photography studio exposed!
1957 Conn 25J, also have a 34J's recording bell

More interesting is that the photographer has a studio in Moosup, Connecticut!
