The great Tucker Jolly.
He would typically perform on a Besson 4v compensating F tuba, but the description in this video says he was playing on a borrowed Miraphone F at the tuba symposium.

That's even more impressive!arpthark wrote: Fri Oct 17, 2025 12:19 pm... he was playing on a borrowed Miraphone F at the tuba symposium.
Is there anybody else that can play horn concertos on the original octave?

It wasn't perfect. It was interesting...and a good exercise...
Emphases has changed, and (rightly so?) players today are way focused on how well they can control their very low range.
Floyd played there as well. I think he was recently divorced and had lost weight and was sporting some sort of mod haircut.
He left his Gronitz F tuba at home and brought a Meinl-Weston, which - at that time - did not have a good reputation for F tubas.
He said that the reason he brought it was because he was tired of people crediting his playing ability to his instrument, so he decided to play one that many players viewed as wretched. (None of the models with that name today are anything like the instrument that he had at that get together over 40 years ago).

Tucker Jolly made a fine recording but listening to Sarah Willis in Havana play it back to back... I like Sarah's version but I have a soft spot for her. I have played horn but not F tuba.
