Re: Finding a mouthpiece for a French horn doubler

I dunno. I'm a low horn player and trumpet high range is not anything I've ever been able to do. I think I need a wider cup to function up high for some reason. My horn high range pretty much stops at A below high C, and my tuba range goes almost that high (but not claiming I can play tunes up there ...

Re: Cerveny vs. Lidl

Very curious about the low range on a three valve older rotary CC tuba. Seems it would not be a low range instrument.

Re: What did you play today?

Yesterday I played the cello on the English Horn part in a woodwind quartet. We had a clarinet playing the 1st oboe part (he can transpose,) a flute on the 2nd oboe part, and a real live bassoonist.
Since I read F transposition as a clef, it doesn't matter what instrument I play it on.

Re: Finding a mouthpiece for a French horn doubler

The low register with the 4th valve is a mess, though, and for some reason C natural in the staff (bass clef notation) is really awkward and difficult to hit in the center, but that was the case also on the B&H Regent, and regardless of mouthpiece choice. Is that a known troublesome note on E ...

Not sure what that apology is for -- my own encroaching senility remembers nothing needing one.

Curious why, Mark. I like my Sterling compensator but adjusting to the stuffiness in the low register was required. I never could pay my 2280 in tune.

Re: Finding a mouthpiece for a French horn doubler

I did work my way up over time; euph then tuba. The problem high brass players have with large cups is that their buzz width is the same as it is in the small cup, as is their air supply. Those two have to adjust. It has been hilarious to hear a high level horn player take a toot on my tuba (years ...

Any other self learners on here????????

Some interesting parallels -- did have extensive education as a violinist, as mentioned, but in retrospect, the usual, no competent instruction from any teacher. (This fascinates me, how actually being given the information one needs to learn the ...

Re: Finding a mouthpiece for a French horn doubler

As a still playing horn player, what I suggest is that you find a 30mm or 31mm tuba cup. I've never played a Bombino and have no reference as to what it "likes." I use a Wick 5 on my Eb. For a newbie, the 32E might be a place to start though.
As a newbie to a tuba-sized cup -- being able to play it ...

Re: Quintet Musings

Could be he just needs to hear recordings because he can't tell from where he's sitting that it's a bit heavy. A bit politically tricky to suggest that though. Maybe --- "Hey, you guys sound SO good how about I record you so you can hear yourselves?"

Sounds totally legit. Not wanting to ship means he actually has it. And it is not convoluted "enough" to sound iffy to me. I find scammers will say "my aunt/uncle died and left me this and I don't know what to do with it so I'm selling it." And they do not want local pickup because they don't have ...

No reference to bort2, but my experience with AI is that it simply reports what it has found in social media databases. In other words, largely crap. It will say something, I will come back with "you are incorrect, and the truth is" and it will say, yes you are correct. The fact that people use AI ...

Anyone who wants to learn the basics of phrasing should just read Tabuteau's book. I probably spelled his name wrong. On the contrary, if a person is "innately musical," I consider it bordering on insulting when a teacher who cant help with technique - which is why the student came for a lesson in ...

Horn players also love John Williams stuff, even if it is always a chop killer. Being in a blasting horn section is pretty much the height of fun.

it does remind me of the afore-mentioned "narrow wide rim" mouthpiece. Which I assume is for entry level professionals.

BTW, to muck up the works here, a friend of mine has recently starting playing on a tuba mouthpiece that has a horn rim on it. I kid you not. He is a pro, and i'm not being ...

I find the Eb tuba part in brass band absolutely perfect for me.

Over the past 20mo I’ve fallen in love with this instrument. Yes, I love my euphonium but I wish I could have picked up the Eb Bass 30 years ago.

You're reading the Eb part in treble clef, correct?

We get parts in both ...

Re: What are your favorite pieces for wind band?

I find the Eb tuba part in brass band absolutely perfect for me. Its range is one I do well on tuba (I don't have the air for blasting down in the leger lines) and the parts can be surprisingly challenging without every part being that way. For some odd reason I actually enjoy being "the beat" in a ...

For those who enjoy performing and want the continued exposure to that situation, I can see that the scenario you describe would be very beneficial.
