Re: Stuck valve problem

That's a rotor horn, right?

You could also tap the mechanism open with a rubber mallet very lightly (on the rotor side, not the linkage). My 181's valves like to freeze up when I haven't played it in a while, and that usually works for me.

Re: New Jakob Winter case for Miraphone 186

I bought one new a couple years ago for my DS. It handles a lot better than the one on my 181 (about 20yo at this point).

Re: WTB K&M Large Tuba Stand**updated again**

B&H Photo is pretty legit. I've bought a few things from them. One thing to keep in mind is that they are observantly Jewish and ordering is disabled on Shabbat and major Jewish holidays.

I've been meaning to say that I love your signature line, @arpthark. I remember renting those videos from Blockbuster (or whatever our local movie rental place was) and watching them with my siblings. They're hilarious!

Schlipf #5, huh? Sent him a message, hopefully willing to sell that separately.

Re: My 26/27 orchestra season starts next week

I lucked out this year. 4 out of 5 cycles I'm on at least half the program (including a rare on-everything cycle to start).

The 5th I don't know the rep yet (we do a youth concerto competition every year and decide the rest of the rep just before the cycle starts)

Re: I'm impressed

Some 20 years ago I saw a "gig bag with benfits" for saxophones in a catalogue.

I've also seen those "gig bags with benefits."

muted sax:

From the early-mid 1970's, I remember orange foam donuts in local (concert band) saxophonists' bells.

They're pretty silly.

The sound emerges from all ...

An aside: I don't think I've ever seen muted sax before. Even had to go back in the video after watching it to be sure it wasn't in the tenor's bell the whole time.

Thanks for the update, Chris. I'm still toying with your other suggestion (the Wick), but will probably hold out for a Schlipf unless it becomes impossible/prohibitively expensive.

WTB Schlipf #5 Practice Mute

Looking for a Schlipf #5 for my new Wessex Gnagey. It's out of stock at Buddy Rogers and Chris mentioned to me they might stop carrying them altogether.

Re: What tubas were in your section/studio?

High school we had a couple 3/4 Yamaha converibles (105?) and an old Cerveny (we knew it as a Kaiser but I think it was a 681).

In college, the studio horns were a couple 186s, a YCB-822, and a YFB-621. I remember the 5XJs being popular for personal horns but there were a few others.
