Re: Apartment Living Practice
I mean this was a decade or more of this that I heard of it, but some people might feel safer doing them in a public area like this instead of someone's home, and I am not sure if they were kicked out of the unit for doing business there.

Re: Apartment Living Practice
I have known people who have rented storage lockers to teach lessons in or practice. Some of the climate controlled ones are quite expensive near me, but it might be worth checking out.
During better climate months, I would practice outside at parks.

Re: Eastman 834 CC
Out of all seriousness of the sizes, I think the Eastman 834 was marketed (when I first heard of it this way) as a 5/4 to compete in the market with a PT 6 or Thor, since those horns are in vogue. That is how several were pitching it, but after seeing these pics (okay, I studied with Mark when he ...

Re: Eastman 834 CC
One thing that impressed me was even though the valves were a little longer, the valves were very light and fast. I liked them better than B&S and miraphobe pistons
Yes it's a very good Tuba, but at this price point you can save quite a bit of money buying a slightly used European horn over a new ...

Re: Eastman 834 CC
I was taking a lesson with Don Harry years back and was concerned about my size of horns.
Don Harry came told me to stop worrying about the size of tubas and to focus on if it is a good tuba.
Is it a good tuba? I haven’t played the YCB 623 but people I trust say it is a good horn. The B&S 606P is ...

Re: Tuba to Euph question
I’m in the midst of trying to get one of the schools I work with to get euphoniums with a 51D and is one of the ones I recommend to my college students. It’s just a great euphonium mouthpiece. I’ve been a fan of the David Childs, the Steven Mead Ultra in some cases for those with a bit of a ...

Re: Mahler Symphony no. 1 Tuba Choice (Poll)
So I just thought, you have the PhD, and you're asking us??
There is a difference than researching the scores and autographs, which I did last night, however actual oral history, performance practice, and experience playing it influences my decision equally as much as what a score or the ...

Ask Mahler.
Doing some research--not sure if he knew the difference between the bass tuba and contrabass tuba (publishers would often add this in), but his own pen says "bass tuba"

Bump for Isaac.
This is a fantastic example of the horn and I have spent a bit of time playing it when he got it. I have found on other examples of this model that the low C had issues for me, but it did not at all on this particular horn, tuning was very workable, and it has a huge sound with ...

Re: The Nashville Symphony
One does wonder how far they fell into the trap of putting all the money into the non-musician staff.
I read in multiple sources 27 full-time staff for an orchestra of 77 musicians. Is that typical?
Boston Symphony did a video where they have 3 music librarians (bigger orchestra but ...

Re: PT-64-S replacement?
I have an older PT 64 that is on loan to a student, and owned a PT 65 before that. They both seemed to have a semi-modified C4 cup, the PT 65 I think had a larger throat and a sharper rim.
If you like that, I would recommend to try something like a GW MMVI Baer, which uses a C4 style rim with a ...

Mahler Symphony no. 1 Tuba Choice (Poll)
I have a once in a lifetime call (okay I said I would never get to play a single one and got lucky) to perform Mahler’s Symphony No. 1.

And as for your suggestion that we meet up since we’re both in Ohio, I’m going to pass on that. I’ve had quite a few people in the community warn me, very plainly, to keep my distance from you.

JC,

I received word another one of my good tuba friends, Allen V. Carter, passed away today. For those on the old forum, he used to post under the handle “porkchopsisgood”.
