Ive played a few of these and I think they are excellent tubas but dont play like F tubas at all much more like small CCs. Perfect for small ensembles imo

Silly price but maybe one of yall can offer 500 bucks and get something out of it.

as we've been steered off-topic, once again...

Of course, music directors should be able to hire whomever they see fit to hire, and for whatever reason.
Very few businesses hold "blind interviews".
Hiring someone because they play extremely well (or really know their stuff in engineering, or ...

it feels like these orchestras decide who they want before the fact

Aren't the principal trumpet and tuba player in The Phoenix Symphony married?

Surely that's just a coincidence.

Just an observation but in my city Orchestra, nearly everyone is either friends or students or friends of ...

I don't know how accurate stuff I find on the internet ever is, but if what I found is accurate, the executive director makes enough money to pay about seven sidemen musician's' salaries, and all the office workers together make enough money to pay the salaries of about 21 sidemen musicians.

I ...

That's really pretty. Is the 5th valve long (flat 2 steps)?

Ah great question, I've updated the post but yes it's a 2-3 combo

The best combo, genuinely if I can ever get this set up I will and have paid to have an extended 5th slide made before. It just gives you so many better options ...

Whenever I read about an orchestra's situation like this, I always wonder what their specific circumstances are that are not being publicized.

For example, the San Jose (CA) Symphony Orchestra went bankrupt about 25 years ago even though the area was drenched in money. The public commentary was ...

From another version of the same story:

“…The symphony said ongoing operating deficits and existing financial obligations made continuing the season untenable, despite a more than 50% increase in revenue since 2024…”

Wow. That seems like a non-trivial fact, if accurate.

Yeah ...

The thing that I'm uncomfortable with is
"bloke worked on this instrument, so it's really great"
(or the opposite of that statement).

The fact that people seem to bring into their sales pitch the person who repaired an instrument when getting rid of it is the thing that I'm uncomfortable with ...

I owned a Satin silver 38k years ago and the relentless tarnishing that comes with this finish is unbearable. I could polish it in the morning and it'll be leaving black marks all over my clothes and hands by the evening rehearsal. Idk if its a conn thing or what but id just keep that in mind

Pretty neat ive never seen one of these before

Yeah if you put your email down just be prepared to receive some scammer emails. Ive received at least a dozen. Some disappointed me that it was a faker but thats how it rolls.

That ones been there for a long time. No idea why they think they can get that much for something that clearly needs a couple grand in work and shipping to get that work.

Good news!!!! (Why is this so rare, anymore?)

That's great news! And yes im very suprised to be honest. I've seen folks get thier instruments back maybe twice

What used to happen in high school and occasionally in university is that folks would pour a bottle of water either into the bell or leadpipe then set the horn back down, player would pick it up try to play and realize theyve been got, then as they empty the water on the floor everyone would look ...

^ But the VMI CC you bought is very similar to this tuba, and in much better condition. I think you got the better horn

This tuba here has had a lot of work done on it; some of it dubious. Look at the 4th valve tubing on the back of this tuba. Looks like someone cut a bad section of ...

Even more ironic, I bought mine from Quinn as well. Glad to see hes still in the game

Damn if this one had popped up a month ago id have already bought it! This is the same set up the one I had that was stolen had. Long left hand 5th valve. Only difference mine had the removable bell. A great find

One of my colleagues in the Army band won her position on a 188, just wanted to put another coin in the "These are excellent tubas" jar. If you had to have just 1 tuba a 188 is one of the ones to have.
