Re: TubaChristmas- Bel Air, MD
I attended the Bel Air event several years ago and it was great.

Does anyone happen to know which location is shown on the home page? That's a lot of low brass!

Re: Nickel in valves
Thinking a bit about trombone slides...
Is it reasonable to assume that interior tube surfaces of chrome-plated nickel-silver (or brass) inner slides would also be plated?
Thanks.

Thanks for your post, gocsick. Doubt away!

Re: Nickel in valves
Thanks. This is likely a final attempt in yet another fool's errand.
I'm having fun and keeping busy with natural trumpet with nickel-free gear. I would like to play in a community band and TubaChristmas, but I guess it's not meant to be. One company I'm aware of (Schmidt) produces an entirely ...

Re: Nickel in valves
Thanks arpthark and bloke.
The Carol Brass trumpet that didn't seem to cause issues was lacquered brass with s.s. valves, though that was a few years ago and I'm much worse now.
I do react to prolonged contact with 316L ('surgical') used in wrist watch cases.
I'll start asking manufacturers ...

Nickel in valves
I have a severe, debilitating nickel allergy, triggered by skin contact and ingestion of a wide variety of nickel-containing foods, resulting in systemic effects including hives. I suspect, but can't really document, that playing a Yamaha trumpet with nickel-plated valves over several days may have ...

Re: At what age did you begin developing somewhat of a more sophisticated sense of taste in entertainment?
Too loud is too common, but it took a while for me to recognize that my own hearing damage (thanks to years of playing bell-up euphonium) was contributing to 'too loud.' With hyperacusis, I can't attend small-group early music performances without ear protection. Fortunately, the latest Apple ...

1960s-1970s: Watched TV. No real interest in music outside of playing trombone/euphonium in school band in the 70s/early 80s.:facepalm2:
1980s-1990s: Listened to 60s/70s rock, now called 'classic rock.' I was sheltered and unaware of punk, even in college during the early/mid 80s :wall:). What a ...

Re: best contact for a Cronkhite response?
I tried to purchase a Cronkhite bag from the 'new' owners multiple times without success. Communication was non-existent and has been since well before the pandemic.
My only purchasing success was for a tuba and two trumpet bags already in-stock from a dealer. I wouldn't bother otherwise.

Re: Where to Study the Tuba?
Academic programs (all academic programs, even the prestigious variety), their department chairs and faculty will tell a prospective student anything and everything they want to hear (i.e., lie) about employment prospects following graduation. Don't believe them. Students are little more than cattle ...
