Re: Check out these bass lines

I guess I need to start recording my funky sousa lines and win fame and fortune!

... If you can play them as cleanly as he does, you'll get clicks.
I promise you that he didn't sound that good playing them the first time through. It took some work.

I'll bet there's a little digital ...

Re: Check out these bass lines

Damn you, now I'm gonna spend all night listening to this.

Seriously, this guy looks like he has 20 pairs of pajamas to wear while his mom grooves to the funky souzy beat all night long. It's all super sexy until you realize that you have to play each lick about 40 times per tune.

I log into f ...

Re: Who was your teacher?

I've had a few teachers, from unknown to well-known:

David Carpenter - high school band director, bassoonist
Dick Rabideau - public school teacher, tenor bone
Bud ? - public school teacher, bass bone
Robert Wigness - Vermont Symphony
Robert Reifsnyder - Ithaca College
John Swallow - New England ...

Can't you get one from Mack (Tom OGrady)? They're pretty cheap.

Re: Strap or harness or bandolier

Well, I just took a strap I already had and connected it to hooks on the horn. The strap has metal connectors which are strong, but make a lot of noise. The placement works for sitting down, but I'd have to tighten it for walking. The more involved harness just looks like too much, and after some ...

Strap or harness or bandolier

I might need/want something to help hold the tuba to my person. In the past I used a bandolier which was simple enough. The straps or harnesses look maybe more secure but also a bigger pain in the a. I don't want to use a stand. Why say you all?

Re: I Need Feedback Again…

Hey, sounds great. There are a couple of times when the melody seems to get lost and it's just harmony notes bouncing around. It might also just be midi messing with my ears. There was a point maybe 25% of the way through where a trumpet pitch was just droning on without necessarily doing anything ...

Re: What did you play today?

Yesterday was trombone quartet playing bass bone. That's a workout. I never practice the bass bone, but some of the quartet charts are fairly difficult, especially if I don't practice.

I am an "adult mentor" for a local college band, and we played a commencement rehearsal today. Lots of std ...

Re: Quintet Musings

I'm not qualified to talk about many things on this forum, but tuba in a quintet is one of my pet topics. I'm of the opinion that you can make almost anything work. BUT, I know that horn wouldn't work in my quintet. We get by mostly on 4/4 Ebs and 3/4 Bbs or Cs. Since Easter, we have been in a ...

Re: puzzled over musical expression marking

I'd bet it means "heavy" something or other. Aside from the fact that it's on a tuba part, "peso" means weight (or "cheap date" in Mexicoland).

Alternatively, Ai says:
Based on a search of Indonesian, regional dialects, and common slang, "pesotum tolono" does not appear to be a recognized phrase in ...

Re: Where to Study the Tuba?

Having gone to music school, played military band, and then having a non-musical career, I would encourage you to look for a teacher and a program that teaches something in addition to classical tuba. Of all the gigs I've had as a pro and as an amateur, most of the money has come from non-classical ...

Valve racket

I have an Olds O99, 3 banger, sort of new to me. I'm a bone player, so no discernable valve skills. I find the valves can be a little loud. Do I just learn how to not mash the valves, or is there some felt or neoprene or urethane donuts I can put in there so I sound less like I have my own ...

FS: King 3b+f 2125 trombone

If you or someone you know is interested in a trombone, this might be useful. King 3b+f 2125. 0.525" medium bore, rose bell, f attachment, bright tenor-y sound, nice player. Ugly lacquer, beautiful sound.

Located in western Virginia, $1000 shipped in the US. Or come pick it up, it's nice here ...

Re: CC and F tubas and high school players... an observation from a parent

It has been that way since I was in school (40+ years ago) . On trombone they push all kids to 547 bore with a valve. The assumption with academics is that you're working toward playing in an orchestra even though that's the least likely outcome of going to music school.

He can buck the system, and ...

Re: Opinions on Raw Brass

Some silver plated instruments are in turn lacquered, and never lose that shine. Raw silver plate has to be polished, and also can discolor your white shirts. You can find chrome or nickel plated pieces, more common I think on smaller instruments.

One time I actually sold a horn because it looked ...

Re: Opinions on Raw Brass

I think it effects the response of the horn slightly. Maybe very slightly. It responds just a little faster. If the lacquer job was really bad, it might make a bigger improvement.

It will, however, have a more noticeable effect on the resale value. I've got a horn that plays great but with funky ...
