The irony of all that is that the referenced low end Cool Wind tuba still costs more than your average Fender Stratocaster.

Re: What did you play today?

Well, yesterday I did my bi-monthly rehearsal with Joyful Noise Concert Band of North Texas. So, we went through some band arrangements of Louis Armstrong, Count Bassie and Duke Ellington. We're gearing up for a set of late October and early November performances.

Re: What did you play today?

Well, Monday I hung out with the Joyful Noise Concert Band of North Texas. It's been my third? rehearsal with them and it seems to be going okay. They play better than the welcoming committee would have you believe. It's a mixture of big band music... Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong, etc.

Re: Who will Fix the Horns?

Given that I have a small fleet of horns I've been eyeing pursuing some brass instrument repair, focusing on tuba for obvious reasons, as a fun little side hobby. I also have two kids in band and have seen the various states of disrepair that the school horns are in. I did reach out to Dr. Sound Guy ...

Re: Uh oh! Another Buzzing Takedown

I always put my pinky near the end of the shank to provide the backpressure I am used to feeling from a horn. Otherwise, yeah, it turns into just "how quickly can I empty my lungs" exercise.

Now, is this useful for instruments where the airflow is already restricted simply by the size of the ...

Re: Wishful Thinking

Wow. The serial number on there was a total flashback for me. The horn I played in high school was serial number 4122. Though, I can guarantee back in the 90s that it was in MJCH better condition than that one. I'm almost scared to reach out and see what the condition of it is currently.

Re: Halftime Shows AFTER the Game

Well, that added a few miles to my car.... Roughly 85 miles when all is said and done.

Left my house in Frisco to pick up my kids in Plano: son from his high school then my daughter from hers. They have two 9/10 (junior varsity) schools feeding each of the 3 senior high schools. That's what the ...

Halftime Shows AFTER the Game

Flabbergasted with this decision as one of my kiddos is impacted by this last minute change. At current, we're fighting this as it was just announced this week. So, tonight, I'll be heading out to a football game for another school to stand in solidarity with this other school and their band ...

Re: Wessex TB 162 : First time playing in an ensemble.

Charlie C Chowder thanks for the recommendation. I hadn't even thought of that. Which is weird considering I have one for my Miraphone as part of my travel kit for outdoor performances. I'd mostly stashed the stuff because I picked up my Dynasty M875 and that quickly became my go to for outdoor ...

Re: Bell Down On Uneven Surface

I keep my tuba out on a Hercules DS552B stand. Just as a side note... Roombas and bell-resting tubas are not a good combination.

Wessex TB 162 : First time playing in an ensemble.

I got this horn in July and had futzed around with it a little. I bought it direct from Wessex and it took just a few days to arrive on my doorstep. My daughter had some fun with it, too. But, I hadn't really played in an ensemble with it.

I recently joined a new group of musicians that bill ...

Re: America's largest collegiate marching band... BGSU

I'm actually rather familiar with Duncanville. Southwestern Bell told my dad one day (years after my parents had divorced) that if he wanted his next paycheck, it was waiting for him at his desk in One Bell Plaza in Dallas. So, he moved to Duncanville from San Antonio. He bought a house near 67 and ...

Re: America's largest collegiate marching band... BGSU

What's really funny is my little 3A school had (during my senior year) 361 students in the high school. That's for grades 9-12. We had roughly 100 students in band. And marched 4 sousaphones every year that I can recall. But, that was back in the late 80s, early 90s. I can recall us having 1 ...

Re: America's largest collegiate marching band... BGSU

russiantuba , I think I might not have been clear. Plano ISD does have some great band programs. The sheer number of All-Region players is truly impressive. However, when it comes to marching, the structure of the High School / Senior High School split does negatively affect the marching band ...

Re: America's largest collegiate marching band... BGSU

As with the Allen marching band mentioned above, bigger isn’t always better.

The real bonus that I see for the kids in the Allen case is that they've attained a sort of notoriety in that they're the biggest high school marching band in the United States, I believe. For this they've gotten to ...

Re: arpthark's Summer 2026 mouthpiece clear-out

I can take the Bach 18, PT-88, and PT-50 off your hands.

My mouthpiece options currently are a couple Bach 24AWs and the clone of the TU23 that came with my TB162. My daughter swears by her Bach 18.
