Re: Cerveny vs. Lidl

It seems that Lidl is sold as the "higher-end brand" than Cerveny, which is strange because Cerveny has a better reputation than Lidl here in France.

On Thomann, both Lidl and Cerveny 684 models are at the exact same price (6.699€), but:
- Case: the Cerveny has a hard case and the Lidl a gig bag ...

Re: BBb for wind band (Cerveny ?)

Thank you, that is a very interesting read.

Just one thing: here in France, sheet music in wind band is almost always transposed for tuba.
Sometimes there is a concert pitch tuba part, but there 99.99% of the time a Bb tuba part written in Bb (either treble clef or bass clef, I've seen both).
So ...

BBb for wind band (Cerveny ?)

Behind this very generic title, here are my current thoughts.

Following this topic , I gave it a lot of thoughts, and for several reasons, I think I will go towards a BBb.

My reasons are:
- big-ish Eb are quite expensive (or quite beaten)
- a lot of wind band sheet musics are in Bb
- in my band ...

Actually, I think I just found it here.

It's the version from Theodore Moses Tobani for Military Band.

Re: French military orchestra tuba audition

Since the opera itself dates before the invention of the instrument, I doubt it.
Maybe it's a bar counting test

Joke aside, it might be a wind band arrangement, because it's an audition for a wind band.

French military orchestra tuba audition

Not sure any of you would/could candidate, but I think you might find 4 things interesting:
- Position for contrabass tuba, doubling on bass tuba
- Position title is for "contrabass saxhorn", but the required instrument is actually "contrabass tuba" (historic legacy)
- Contrabass tuba can be Bb or C ...

Re: High note in wind band part

Where is Charlie Vernon's one-page treatise, when we really need it?

I'm missing the reference there, can you elaborate?

juvenile coarse humor, which is way more true than funny - describing some symphonic low brass players attitudes

It's 100% true then, but don't blame them ...

@Schlitzz the conductor did not notice when I used my bass trombone on one tune at last rehearsal, not sure he will notice a high tuba note

Re: High note in wind band part

bloke there is no tuba in the original, the orchestration was the following:
- 2 flutes
- 1 oboe
- 2 clarinets
- 1 bassoon
- 2 horns
- 2 cornets
- 1 trombone
- percussions
- chords

I will see at next rehearsal where it fits in the orchestration, but from all the versions I can hear online, it is ...

High note in wind band part

Hello friends,

Just got a new part to play in the wind band and ... I'm troubled.

For the context, it's a wind band arrangement of "Galop Infernal" from Offenbach's "Orphée aux enfers".

I can play the notes (low Bb to high Eb) because I'm playing an Eb ...

Re: bass and tenor trombone "doubling"

Is tuba a double for a trumpet player ?
Mostly same fingerings, same instrument family (brass), and you can even have them in the same key (some octaves apart).

Edit: no offense meant and no offense taken, I just like debating

Re: bass and tenor trombone "doubling"

4-5. My F tuba has six valves with two on the left. Not only are the fingerings all different than, say, Bb, but the fingering patterns are also different in many spots. Is that any easier than the different positions between a symphonic tenor with one trigger versus a bass with two triggers ...

Re: bass and tenor trombone "doubling"

I think that playing "at the highest level", tenor trombone and bass trombone are definitely different instruments and worth the doubler "title" if you play them both proficiently.
However, I do agree with you that we could (and maybe should )certainly say the same for a tubist playing both bass and ...

I wonder if the reason is just that trombone players better negociated the terms with the union than the tuba players :eyes:

Re: Wessex shank size

Yes, but I found the difference between a DW 3L huge compared to the PT.
My tuba was very hard to play with the DW: unfocused and sucking a lot of air. When I tried the PT it was instant win, and it never faded.
