Just one thing: here in France, sheet music in wind band is almost always transposed for tuba.
Sometimes there is a concert pitch tuba part, but there 99.99% of the time a Bb tuba part written in Bb (either treble clef or bass clef, I've seen both).

Not sure any of you would/could candidate, but I think you might find 4 things interesting:
- Position for contrabass tuba, doubling on bass tuba
- Position title is for "contrabass saxhorn", but the required instrument is actually "contrabass tuba" (historic legacy)
- Contrabass tuba can be Bb or C ...

Is tuba a double for a trumpet player ?
Mostly same fingerings, same instrument family (brass), and you can even have them in the same key (some octaves apart).

4-5. My F tuba has six valves with two on the left. Not only are the fingerings all different than, say, Bb, but the fingering patterns are also different in many spots. Is that any easier than the different positions between a symphonic tenor with one trigger versus a bass with two triggers ...

I think that playing "at the highest level", tenor trombone and bass trombone are definitely different instruments and worth the doubler "title" if you play them both proficiently.
However, I do agree with you that we could (and maybe should )certainly say the same for a tubist playing both bass and ...

Yes, but I found the difference between a DW 3L huge compared to the PT.
My tuba was very hard to play with the DW: unfocused and sucking a lot of air. When I tried the PT it was instant win, and it never faded.
