Re: Eastman F tubas

The 867 is basically all-around better than the 866, and the 865 is all-around better than the 864. The earlier models (864 and 866) have a smaller bore and are intended to sound brighter, but in my opinion they suffer a lot from the stuffy rotor F tuba syndrome and aren't very good. The 65/67 fix ...

Re: What is the best way to pay for an $8,000 Tuba purchas

I've used PayPal with no issues, on friends and family mode. However, me and the seller stood together and made sure it was the right amount to the right account and that it cleared before I walked out with the horn that I had just playtested. I wouldn't do it digitally without being in person.

I ...

Re: 4 vs. 5 valve on BBb tubas?

Keeping in mind bassonists have to exert much less force over a much shorter distance to actuate their keys, and their instruments still respond normally when the key is halfway between up and down

Re: 4 vs. 5 valve on BBb tubas?

Being someone who doesn't spend enough time doing scales, I'm happy to exchange a little bit of slide pulling on 1 or 2 long notes in exchange for agility on fast passages. 235 isn't incredible, but I much prefer that over ineffectively wiggling my pinky in order to play both out of tune AND ...

It supposedly helps transfer vibrations between different parts of the instrument that are not soldered or brazed together. Some people swear by them, some people think they're snake oil. Either way, it's a lot of money for a piece of metal.

Re: non-musical distracting (and disgusting) noises created when playing

There's a set of string quartets by Ben Johnston that have some really amazing harmonies in odd temperaments. As far as I know the only group who has recorded them all is the Kepler quartet, who actually moved to be near the composer as he died to perfect it. The music demands tuning accuracy within ...

Softone mute equivalent for tuba?

Before I invest in a sheet of neoprene and a bunch of time and go into the adventure of making my own, does anyone know of an equivalent to the Softone bucket/practice mutes for tuba? I currently use the large bass trombone one on my euphonium, and it could stand to be a tiny bit deeper for proper ...

I've played this specific horn also, it feels and sounds the same if not better than the actual Yamaha 621. Valves aren't on par with the real deal but they're still quite nice. Comes with the long or short 5th too which I like.

This video gets passed around a lot but it's not an accurate model of how brass instruments work. The model uses an open tube which by nature has low pressure nodes at both ends like a flute (and sounds like a flute) rather than high at one end ...

Re: Seriously, why?

Eastman seems to weirdly be oriented towards tubas and saxophones, though they certainly make other wind instruments.

I believe this is because they happened to hire designers for tuba and saxophone (Chuck Kerrigan and Alex Hahn - maybe Bob Mintzer) that took it seriously and wanted to make ...

Re: Uh oh! Another Buzzing Takedown

Buzzing for me has been most effective as a tool for encouraging airflow. A lot of people who find buzzing ineffective aren't supporting the buzz enough because it's way way more air than you need on the horn - so it is different from playing a real instrument. Yes, it takes a lot more air to ...

Re: Air moving through the horn

.
For example, at sea level, at approximately 70* farenheit, sound waves propagate (travel is not a good word, since a sound wave is actually a series of compressions and rarefactions) at about 1,115 feet per second. The pitch of open BBb (not pedal) is @ 29 Hertz. So 1,115/29 is about 38 feet ...

- You've got to format a score in a certain way so that when Musescore reformats something and it pushes notes/system around everything can jump in such a way that you lose your place. The automatic format functions make it a bit squirrelly sometimes.
