Re: 5v vintage Alexander 163 CC, $5,500 (Houston, TX/FB)

I’m the current owner of this Alexander 163 CC.

I wanted to clarify a few things, as this thread seems to have gone considerably further than the original post warranted.

First, the instrument is in excellent playing condition, mechanically sound, and, in my opinion, an above-average example of a ...

FS: Alexander 163 CC Tuba SOLD

Selling an early 1950s Alexander 163 CC tuba with 5 valves. I bought this horn from another member here on the forum.

The pitch on this particular 163 is above average. The only notes I regularly use alternate fingerings for are D and Eb in the staff. Both are a little low, but they are lip-able ...

Re: Uh oh! Another Buzzing Takedown

I used to be a HUGE buzzer, and now I don't buzz nor teach it.

My best friend was diagnosed with focal dystonia, and after not getting any better, he went to Jan Kagarice, who is a world renown expert on it and has help top level musicians recover. Some of those names that have been open about it ...

Re: Uh oh! Another Buzzing Takedown

These type of posts can be annoying because almost every one of them eventually becomes the same decades-old argument over whether mouthpiece buzzing is good or bad.

Yes, buzzing a mouthpiece feels different from playing the tuba. The full instrument supplies acoustic impedance and resonant ...

Re: ‘76 Mirafone Research

I'd have sworn I've seen a photo of Pilafian with his quintet holding a 186 on some recording/album cover.

But then....I swear all the time....

:smilie7:

Attached below are all the album covers Sam recorded. The hindemith album appears to look like a 186 or just the MW Bill Bell model with ...

Re: 4/4 Tubas in Professional Symphony Recordings

Having had the opportunity to spend time with the Conn in its original configuration, I find some of the comments being made about it interesting. In my experience, the tuba was relatively easy to play. My primary concern was simply that the valve configuration did not conform to what most players ...

Re: Schilke CLE Mouthpiece

I’ve heard of this piece and tried it once. They fixed the issues with the weird bite the Schilke Helleberg II has from what I remember.

The specs of it is very close to the Conn Large Helleberg that you’re playing on currently with a tighter throat. That could be the only negative is that it’s ...
