Re: WTB: old style Alexander Mouthpiece 35

Thank you all for your comments and input. Sometimes things are just not available any more…I will stick to my more modern (ca 1980-ies) Alexander 35 Mouthpiece which I use with an adapter on my Alex 164.

So I just need to buy an Alexander 163 tuba to find a buddy for my Alexander 33 Mouthpiece ...

There is actually 2 very nice Cerveny 601 Tubas, true Kaisertubas, at the Brass Shop in Aalten Netherlands.

WTB: old style Alexander Mouthpiece 35

Hi,
I am looking for an old style Alexander Mouthpiece 35 (cup diameter 35 mm, bore 7,8 mm). I am especially interested in the old form (see picture attached as example. Picture is from this web, but do not recall from whom. I hope it is ok that I use it for reference).

I really hope, that one of ...

Re: B, c, des and d in the staff on Bb Tuba

Thomas, Arpthark,

thanks for your interesting comments. I have added some pictures with the mouthpieces (PT64, Newer Alexander 35, older Alexander 36 from left to right) in the dropbox folder.

The 35 and especially the 36 sound massiv with a broad colourful sound and direct response and ...

Re: 4 vs. 5 valve on BBb tubas?

Hi,

for responsiveness and sound reasons (ok it might not apply to all Bb tuba models, but the Fafner and the 197 do not come with 5 valves), weight and cost and the probability of allow H and C in literature, I would always prefer a 4 valve tuba.
- for fine tuning, a movable 1st slide would cover ...

Re: B, c, des and d in the staff on Bb Tuba

Hi,

Arpthark, Bloke and Thomas thanks for your comments.

After a 12 year intermezzo with french Horn, I came back to tuba in 2024 with an Alexander double tuba Modell 166 in F/C (probably the last 166 made by Alexander around 2010/2011, this was the tuba sitting in Mainz since probably 2011 and ...

B, c, des and d in the staff on Bb Tuba

Hi,

what is your experience playing B, c, des and probably d in the staff on a Bb tuba. These notes, for me, do not resonate as good as the other notes and sometimes are more work to center them, make them sound good and speak clearly (Bob Kolada described this as „squirellyness“ in this forum Jun ...

Re: Finding a mouthpiece for a French horn doubler

Hi Thirdhorn,

I can not advice but offer some experience instead. After 32 years of tuba playing (PT and Klier Models 32-33 mm rim diameter), I switched to french horn in 2012. It took me almost 1 year to get accustomed to the much smaller mouthpiece rim of the french horn (I played 17,5 mm). The ...

Re: Quality BBb Tubas

You are right Mark. And the 68 and 68x nomenclature of Amati and Cerveny originates directly from the Bohland and Fuchs model designation of 68 for their 1/2, 3/4, 4/4 and „ganz weit“ (extra large) series of B tubas (also available in C), with the later, extra large having 132 and 82 mm diameter at ...

Re: Help identifying a vintage Červený 4+1 rotary tuba (Opera or different model?)

Mary,

thx for the reply and nice that you got a lot of feedback.

Don‘t worry. You have an Opera early 1960-ies. The S linkages and the valve rotors as pictured are THE very typical set-up of the Cerveny/Amati/Lignatone ones from this time. (my picture in my earlier post shows the later version of ...

Re: Help identifying a vintage Červený 4+1 rotary tuba (Opera or different modell?)

Dear Mary,

Congratulation for this nice instrument.

From an old Amati catalogue from the 1970-ies I have attached a picture of the #822 B Bass Opera from VF Cerneny. Looks very similar to your model. (body, bell ratio and postion, entry of mouthpiece into 5th valve etc).

Regarding dimensions, I ...

Identification of Hirsbrunner B Tuba Modell

Hi,

I have an older (end of 60-ties, early 70-ties) Hirsbrunner B Tuba 3 valve Compensated. Still with brass valves and not the „later“ plastic/composite rotors. The tube is 112 cm high (44“) and a bell diameter of 42,5 cm (16,7“), bore 19,5 mm (7,67“). Based on bore and bottom bow taper it is not ...

Re: new tuba: Alexander 164 kaiser BBb

I copy what Thomas has said about the Alex 164 currently at Alexander in Mainz. I played the tuba when I was there mid of february. With 17660 € as (compared that to other famous hand made tubas ) one would get a fully hand-made tuba based on sheet brass. Even the valve tubing is all handmade (bent ...
