Re: The American in Paris Solo--Some Thoughts

Does this mean we should totally ignore the style that EVERY OTHER INSTRUMENT sets up prior in the entire piece?

Not even in the slightest, and it's ridiculous to suggest that is what I was implying. Every comment I have made so far has been about the reasoning behind our interpretation ...

Re: The American in Paris Solo--Some Thoughts

And my point was that you are using that speculation to justify a hard stance on an interpretation choice, which is flawed logic (even if I don’t disagree with the end conclusion).

The fact of the matter is that there is not a single person on this forum who definitively knows how Gershwin would ...

Re: The American in Paris Solo--Some Thoughts

..and Mr. Gershwin may have later reluctantly re-scored that short melody line it for tuba simply because the instrument could cover the lowest C in the motif, and - having to settle for a D in such an exposed solo line - perhaps hurt his musical sensibilities more than handing it off to the tuba ...

Re: The American in Paris Solo--Some Thoughts

For anyone who's interested in the Clague edition, I know the Cincinnati Symphony was involved in the editing process for it, and there is a live recording of it from 2024 on Spotify.

Re: The American in Paris Solo--Some Thoughts

In Feburary 2026, Mark Clague, the editor-in-chief of the George and Ira Gershwin Critical Edition included this comment in the release of the new critical edition of "American in Paris":

"Each edition* restores Gershwin’s original orchestration and articulation, clarifies and corrects errors

Re: Selling a Cerveny CC "Piggy"

This came across my Facebook feed a few days ago in the "Tuba, Sousaphone, Euphonium, Baritone, Trombone, Marketplace" group, listed by a name that resembles the poster here (not Roger Lewis). I don't know the individual personally even though we live in the same area, but it seems legitimate to me ...

Re: What did you play today?

I played some enjoyable educational orchestra concerts tonight. Fun Road trip story superimposed on enjoyable music that the kids seemed to get a kick out of. At one point the road-trippers stop at a gas station for snacks and poll the kids on what to get. Kit-kats and takis were the resounding ...

Re: Pacific Symphony - Principal Tuba

Bloke, they don't accept money orders, cash, and bank checks because they can't simply tear them up if you cancel appropriately. Since those forms have actual value, they would need to mail them back. Easier to just not accept them.

They might get calls for refunds, but they wouldn't get the refund ...

Re: Pacific Symphony - Principal Tuba

Regarding recording in a hall: you don't need to record in the most amazing hall in your area to produce a recording representative of your playing.

russiantuba See above quote.

Bottom line: In most cases, it is cheaper for a candidate to purchase a video recording device and rent time in a ...

Re: Pacific Symphony - Principal Tuba

Regarding the equity concerns: Yes, there is still a cost associated with video recorded prelims, however the equity concerns of the current model are far greater. As tofu pointed out, every time a candidate participates in an audition, they have to pay travel, oversize baggage, lodging, and time ...

Re: Pacific Symphony - Principal Tuba

Auditions are expensive endeavors for both parties, even if they aren't cutting checks to cover lodging and travel. "No cost cattle call" vastly underestimates the time and resources that goes into conducting an audition.

In the past, music directors did have the power to unilaterally hire ...

Re: Pacific Symphony - Principal Tuba

Candidates don't pay to apply. It's a fully refundable deposit. The check is only cashed in the event that a candidate does not show up to the audition, which unfortunately does happen, sometimes without notification. The few checks that do get cashed don't even come remotely close to being able to ...

Re: Beelzebub Orchestra Arrangement

Just to clarify Kontrabasstuba's recommendation, that Thorsten Reinau's arrangement appears to be for "blasorchester", which is a wind band without strings. Musikverlag Reinau doesn't list the specific instrumentation or share an expert of the score, but the recording sounds like a wind band to me ...

Re: Beelzebub Orchestra Arrangement

I wasn't able to find Curtis Peacock's orchestration of this commercially available (for sale or rent), although their tuba and piano version is for sale and their version for tuba and concert band is for sale and rental through Carl Fischer. The orchestration seems to be relatively recent (2022 ...

russiantuba I refute absolutely nothing about how you've described the school systems work, and I didn't in my previous post also. The part I disagree with is that you are suggesting that your family member should have accepted less pay than was owed to their experience and be paid at the same rate ...

Schlitzz, is correct. You should always list relevant experience on your resume, which includes your formal training in the area. What the committee does with or draws from that information is up to them, not the candidate. The candidate's job is to present themselves as wholly and accurately as ...

NUX B-6 Wireless System

Has anyone ever tried a NUX B-6 Wireless System on sousaphone? I'm considering picking one up for my Conn 38k and Oktoberfest gigs this year. I typically have an AT2020 on a mic stand in front of me, but it'd be nice to have a wireless set-up.

Things that look appealing to me:
- simple, plug-and ...

Re: Music Scanning Software

I've never had any luck with the MuseScore scan-to-notation feature either. I try a PDF every once in a while to see if they've made any progress, but the result (if there is one) is such a mess that it would be safer and easier to just re-engrave it from scratch.

It's reassuring to hear that the ...
