I’m not trying to be an ass, but if buzzing works, do it.
I stopped buzzing and began focusing on leading with the air and letting the lips vibrate as a reaction instead of the action. It works and playing has never been easier. I will trust what Jan has said and done since she has retrained ...

Re: Uh oh! Another Buzzing Takedown
End of the day, people can do whatever they want, I don't care. I also know what I have experienced, what the experts have found, and what the physics of the instrument indicate. If you want to fight physics because -insert dead pedagogue- said so, fine. That is your purgative, and if it works for ...

Re: A new Blog - ENJOY
FD is a weird topic for me. I’m almost positive I had/have some type of it, but I am 10 years removed from the audition circuit and don’t play in any stressful environments anymore, which is where it cropped up (actually, in the practice room preparing for those environments). There was a period ...

Just throwing it out there, Mike did have a severe playing injury towards the latter part of his career. Whether or not it was dystonia is unknown, at least to me. The assertion is Jacobs was dealing with some issues, which can be heard in recordings where he has shakiness than can be passed off ...

Re: A new Blog - ENJOY
I'm not a teacher (and only report what I personally do), but I concentrate on the sound (as concentrating on "the proper mechanics" never seemed to get me anywhere as NOR DID "doing what so-and-so hero-player does"), as well as experimenting to discover the EASIEST (vs. necessarily the "proper ...

Re: A new Blog - ENJOY
There were several prominent tubists that played smaller horns (to my knowledge) that didn’t get FD—Toby Hanks, Sam Green, and Richard Watson come to mind.
Toby 100% had FD.
He didn’t play on larger tubas did he? I did study with Roger Rocco who didn’t, but he claimed his was due ...

Focal dystonia, for me, was caused by chronic overbreathing, which can put you in a state of constant fight or flight and mess with the autonomic nervous system. That’s if I’m remembering my ten year old conversation with Jan Kagarice correctly.
That’s why I can absolutely see the correlation ...

FS or FT Raw Brass Gronitz PF125 $7,500
For sale is my Gronitz PF125 F tuba. This horn is in raw brass and is in really good condition. The horn has quite a brilliant high register and is really open down low, and not just for an F tuba, for a tuba in general. It does have some tuning quirks, but I am sure they could be worked out by ...

I am selling my Meinl Weston Ursus CC, it is located in the Chicago area, but I would be willing to travel a couple hours for serious buyers. Local pickup is preferred, but would ship and buyers expense.
This horn is truly a wonderful playing horn. Easily the best 4/4 CC tuba I have ever played ...
