Re: What did you play today?
It's the start of street band season! Played a gig at a local art gallery open house. Had an absolutely stinker of a 32 bar solo . it started bad and quickly went downhill. Super frustrating because I usually nail that one... Nothing wierd either.. just diatonic chords in F .... F, Bb, Dm, A7, C ...

Re: The American in Paris Solo--Some Thoughts
So everyone is in agreement then?
1) Play it as written
2) Keep it musical
3) Don't make an ass out of yourself or piss off the conductor.
That sounds like good advice all around....

Re: Dillon Adjustable Gap Receiver
Firstly, it doesn’t affect mouthpiece fit in the receiver. It just adjusts the tip of the mouthpiece shank with respect to the joint between the receiver and the lead pipe. If the shank is too large it won’t go in far enough, etc.
Exactly! An American shank mouthpiece and a P shank will go ...

Re: Dillon Adjustable Gap Receiver
I am perpetually confused about gap on tuba ..
On trumpet the effect of the gap was immediately obvious to me... Larger gap tighter slotting and brighter sound but more resistance... Smaller gap felt much more open, more responsive but farther and more difficult to center. It didn't take me long ...

Re: solid wire lead/tin solder
I was actually surprised how much easier 1/16" is to work with... I have a 1/8" roll of 60/40, which is basically a lifeline supply for me. I have to do so much more cleanup with the 1/8" than 1/16".. It night be worth it just to spend the $50 and have a lifetime supply of the smaller gauge ...

Cool.. It looks like they just imported the models that already exist for free in VennCad.. but for quick comparisons it is faster than getting out the macbook to open it up.

According to Wikipedia Tolono.. came from a shorthand note on a surveyors map... to low, no.. swampland.
Pesotum was named after a tribal warrior ..
So obviously that means... Majestically but you know like casual and not too deep.

I would do this as a student... but I could see why most students will not.. Life as a scientist/academic means I am comfortable with public critique in a way most people are not.

Did Russian Christmas with the brass band ( Arr Dave Leppla) this past holiday season. It was definitely challenging but we put a really good (In my opinion at least) version together. Definitely the highest 2nd baritone part I've played.. lots of exposed long lyrical phrases above the staff.

Isn't this just a receiver gap discussion then? I thought the consensus was gap matters much less on tuba than on high brass like trumpet.

I hear ya Joe.. However my brain is in a different place.. All my hobby projects instrument or otherwise are done with the idea of being educational and fun as well as practical. If my goal was really just to have a 5th valve I would just take it to Buckeye Brass and pay Rob to do it. All of my ...

I've heard that in trumpet land before .. I think Trent Austin from Austin Custom Brass used it to describe Chinese factory built instruments or cheaper lives from more boutique makers line the Brasspire Unicorn. I've also heard "Step up" instructs with a better reputation like the Getzen Eternal ...

I am starting to plan a 5th valve addition to my MW20. Realistically... it won't be until late summer or fall so I have time, but I want to get all the parts together.. make any ferrules and the linkages components and braces I need before I start taking things off my tuba.. I have other hobby ...
