I suppose I should clarify that I was referring to the high school me that hadn't quite developed a solid embouchure for bass trombone yet.
Nowadays — and after time on a Wick 1AL and Schilke 58 to strengthen my bass bone embouchure — my current bass piece is basically a fancy 1¼G-sized (a smidge ...

Re: New classification of instrument that I learned about just today on Facebook
BTW, to muck up the works here, a friend of mine has recently starting playing on a tuba mouthpiece that has a horn rim on it. I kid you not. He is a pro, and i'm not being facetious. it is a new release of some kind. He said he likes it. Rim is narrow like a horn rim, not the diameter of a horn ...

Re: Quality BBb Tubas
I loved the concept and cost of the Wessex Excelsior, but when I played a few notes I quickly put it down and moved on.
Is that the model where they took the Hirsbrunner 4/4 BB-flat copy body and put a sort of tucked under compensating valve section on it?
Yup, that's the one.
Then they ...

Re: PT-1 vs. 186 (large bell) BBb
As someone who owns a 2103 (450 mm bell version of the PT-1/3103, which has a 480 mm bell) and sits next to another with a BBb 186, I agree with the points bort2.0 brought up. My section mate's sound is pretty lean with some bite (he uses a Giddings Baer, fwiw), while I (on a Laskey 30G) get a ...

I have a small container of Wright's silver polish. After learning about the baking soda/foil/boiling water trick, I no longer use the silver polish except in an emergency.

It's smaller than you think it is. This Pan American tuba would eventually become the Conn 14J "Director" model.2nd tenor wrote: Mon Mar 30, 2026 12:39 pm The advert says it’s an Eb but my eyes say it might be something else … there’s a lot of tubing there for an Eb.
Also, the 2nd valve is your clue to this being an Eb.

Re: Bombino in quintet?
I use one (a Wessex Bombino) in quintet since I'm not as facile on the B & S 103. Consider the following:
It's very lean sounding, though weightier than an equivalent sized F tuba. I liken it to a bass euphonium.
Don't force the air. It's bore is not much bigger than a euphonium's and will ...

A prime example of how to wear a sousaphone.
That flare doesn't look overly huge. It kinda looks like a Conn 46K, which normally came with, according to the Conn loyalist, a 28" bell? But this looks like a smaller flare than that...

Can't recruit a new player? That's what I'd try first before changing a thing.
Cerveny tubas, as I recall, are pretty light for tubas, being made from thin gauge brass. In this case, I'd let the instrument do more of the work. The resonance alone can make a difference in your sound supporting the ...

21 3/4" bell? That's not that large a bell... Leastwise for a sousaphone. Same as the recording bell 1240s.

My guess is it's not much different from the 30G other than the larger diameter.
If you really want bigger than the G cup, the B cup is the same shape, but deeper. Yes, there's a 32B.
I myself find no need to go bigger than the 30 size rim. I also really like the 30G; it's what I use on my 2103 ...

As you might guess, most bags that are tall enough are otherwise too big for your (slender) instrument. Maybe check with Tom McGrady at Mack Brass? They still sell that copy.
For Protec, perhaps the Cordura changed, but it's still a roomy bag meant to fit the tall King tubas best. I despised how my ...

Re: Indiana Band Inst. sousaphone / ebay
Looks kinda like a smaller version of a 4-valve Martin jumbo Sousaphone that was at a local music store to me a couple years back. So essentially a Martin mammoth, I reckon. Elkhart, IN also checks out.
Too bad it has a Conn neck; Martin Sousaphones are nearly unplayable (discomfort) with them.

To me, it looks like a fixed version of a supposed convertible/dedicated marching tuba. I seem to recall that version having very long/tall slides. And, there may have been mention of a 4-valve marching tuba/G bugle of this size.

The used to be a saying that was popular for a while along the lines of “small tuba, big mouthpiece, big tuba, small mouthpiece.”
Very large tubas can sometimes benefit from the clarity a smaller mouthpiece provides.
This. Sometimes, even just switching from a funneled cup (Helleburg shape ...

Re: Tuning bits in Olds O-99?
Those bits you mention are for the King style (2350 [brass] and 2370 [resin]) sousaphones. They will NOT fit in Conn style (20K etc) Sousaphones and thus, standard shank receivers.
Don't order those (they are different sizes and only one accepts standard shank mouthpieces). Find the ones that fit ...

Firstly, welcome aboard!
I, too, have trouble with this, and single tonguing only goes so fast. The best thing to do is to grab your metronome, put it at a slow tempo (like quarter note=60) and practice lightly at first. You can use the quarter notes to alternate between "da" (or "na") and "ka" (or ...
