Re: A Little Love for the Contrabass Trombone

If Bb contrabass trombones were a little more common, it would be fun to pick one up. My use case is almost non-existent so there isn’t a case to spend real money on one.

But I didn’t hate it when I had 10 minutes to fart around on a pretty nice one.

I ordered 3 bottles of the restock, now I feel like I should have bought more.

Re: Lacquer stripper now that Ferree's cold strip is discontinued

This 21j was overhauled and refinished at some point so I'm not sure what lacquer was used but it seems almost no progress has been made. I'll update again tomorrow. If no progress is made I'll move onto aircraft stripper.

30 minutes in not much of a result. I did fill up the 27 gallon tote 3/5ths of the way so it's pretty diluted now. I'll report back in a hour or two.

Have you tried it on newer epoxy lacquers and older lacquer, too?

I just ask because I've had almost no luck with it besides on old Eastlake orange stuff... but maybe I am not letting it sit long enough. It's lye-based, so I wonder if some mild heat activation would also help.

I have tried ...

Re: Who will Fix the Horns?

I'm not soliciting any more business, but there are people who - rather than deciding to buy a dent machine and jumping right in with no experience - stick their instruments in their cars (after scheduling two or three days with me). They leave with me exhausted and their stuff prepared.

Humans ...

I've found Easy-Off (yellow, not blue) to be pretty reliable and effective. Might have to repeat a few times for stubborn spots.

The gap between the New techs and old techs will continue to widen due to the loss of knowledge transfer in order to gatekeep a trade that much like mechanics is in desperate need of young eager people.

I call sour grapes (or, if you prefer BULLSH'T) on you for this. NONE of the repair ...

I found that most places don't even have a customer service line listed anymore. Everything is being done by ai agents now. :wall:

Re: Who will Fix the Horns?

The reason for the shortage is that the ROI is worse than any other skilled trade. Much like being a mechanic no one wants to invest 1000s of dollars on specialty tools to make peanuts.

I went to a napbrit event 2 years ago and asked around who would teach me and kept getting the same response ...

Josef Klier makes a ton of mps with the small shank, I got mine from Dillon Music. They have contrabass trombone mps (bigger blank than bass trombone so wider rims) and small shank tuba mps. ime with my Eb cimbasso thing you really need a tuba size rim to play a valved tuba length instrument. I ...
