I’m re-reading my copy and amused by some of the dated references. I need two strips of walrus hide (one sprinkled with emery and one with powdered crocus) to really get my burnishing station going.

Those of you familiar with the text, is there anything that needs to be updated? Obviously, there weren’t magnetic dent removal sets back then. But it seems like most everything else is timeless, save for the advice to go to my local gas station to buy a steel industrial drum and things like that.

Currently running dent balls through a badly dented Besson slide (thick metal) and thinking about this text and modern techniques.

There’s also some stuff in there about polishing/buffing piston valves that I was surprised to see. The caveat was to not buff the surface around the piston ports to prevent air leaks.

When I'm in a hurry with those Jupiter sousaphones (with the valves that turn black), yeah I'll admit to buffing them with white buffing compound, cleaning that crap off, washing them real quick with some Dawn or something, putting felts on them, and sticking them back in the casings and moving on to the next sousaphone. I'm not hurting the pistons, and their fitment seems pretty generous and wide-berthish anyway.

They sold the most putrid smelling penetrating oil. Oh my God.
