Martin mammoth -- how much?

Post by Mary Ann »

This instrument is in for cleaning. It turned out to have quite a signifcant bash in the bottom bow, with duct tape on it. I'm told it plays fine, and we have decided to just clean it and let the new owner decide about fixing the bow.
Once again asking about fair market value, as there aren't a lot of those out there, and it's not pristine like the Alexes are. Three valve BBb, bell front, assuming from the 1930s.
I don't have pictures yet; Bell with some dings but not awful, bashed bow pretty bad, tarnished but I don't remember any rust, plays just fine.

I’ll give ya about tree fiddy for it.

Seriously though it might be a good idea to ask the shop that’s doing the work on the tuba to give you an estimate rather than opinions here. Or call a reputable repairman or someone who knows the value of the instrument to give you clarity.

Reverb and eBay are also two good sources for what horns have sold for, e.g. this, this, or this.

Shop is a school system repair shop that does good work, and isn't a dealer of anything. They really have no more idea than I do, and this one has a pretty badly bashed bottom bow. Trying to figure out how much less than $2500 would be fair to sell it for, because it plays fine and fixing the bow might be more work than it's worth. Besides, if you are a player who sets the bow on the chair, a flat bow sits better!
