Conn 20k Male Bell Tenon

Post by EmptyCase »

Looking for a new bell tenon to fit my 1920s conn 40k. The one I currently have on the horn has holes drilled in it and it’s starting to bug me enough to fix it….. BuT…. Conn selmer bing the company it is doesn’t make it very clear what the part number is on their site. I only need the male end.

From my understanding they made their bell tenons slightly shorter(same diameter) in the 30s which explains why the bell doesn’t fit super super well (it being a later replacement/swap with a 1930s 38k). I may just make one myself but that is a last resort. Need this horn soonish.

Thanks for reading!

Could you jab some cylindrical brass rod into the holes, braze them in with silver solder, hacksaw the protruding ends off close to flush, and then file/sand/buff?
If the holes were drilled by some doofus (to line up with the bell screws, etc.) when you remove the part to do the silver brazing, you can also "clock" the male flange so that your repairs don't line up with the bell screws contact points.

I didn't check the CS page, but - based on a jobber price, and the fact that you would pay full retail to CS, CS would probably (??) charge you c. $100 and shipping.

Your older/original one might (??) both fit better than a replacement and be sturdier as well.

If your replacement bell's male tenon is also too tall...well...When removed from the bell elbow (to fill the holes) you know what you can (also) simultaneously do to address the male tenon's excessive height... RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR !!!

I doubt that I'm telling you anything that you don't already know...(other than a wild guess at the CS part cost).

yeah I was considering just filling the holes and I may still do that. The tenon size regarding diameter haven't ever changed on their "full sized" horns(38k,40k, and 20k) I believe, at least not much. The male end doesn't actually go in far enough which Is another issue and why I believe the fit isn't good(being that I assume they were made deeper in the 20s to accommodate for low tolerances, more friction and rotational constraints etc.) At the end of the day I could just make myself a new one if I ever get my lathe running again (which this would be the only motivation to do that at the moment)
