Re: Why should or shouldn’t I renew my ITEA membership?

Tofu accurately stated: "But along the way the academics took over more and more and they seemed to squeeze out the folks like Harvey in shaping the group agenda. The journal became bloated with pages and pages of past performance recital programs. Who cares???"

As someone who was in on TUBA from ...

Either it plays nice or it doesn't. The price has nothing to do with it.

Re: What makes the sound?

I am one of a few people here with an FCC extra-class amateur radio license. Parts of the FCC tests involve antenna operations.

The parallels between feeding a tuba with wind and feeding an antenna with Radio Frequency (RF) energy are amazing.
Resonance, impedance matching, standing waves, etc ...

Re: Walter Sear De Prins tuba on eBay (auction ended)

IIRC, both the Mahillon and dePrins tubas used very thick brass, and thus became popular in schools. The Cerveny tubas had very thin brass.

Re: Walter Sear De Prins tuba on eBay (auction ended)

For three or so years (1968-70) I uncrated and prepared dozens of the dePrins tubas when I worked for Walter Sear.
As I recall, they were--to me--a distant third behind the Cerveny and Mahillon models he also imported. My high school in NJ, knowing that I was studying with and worked for Walter ...

They take a sample of 50 attendees* and calculate the ratio of tattoos to teeth.
If that ratio is above 2.75 then they start with Rocky Top.

*Might those 50 attendees account for half the audience?

Assuming around 150 services, that works out to about $24k.
Is there enough freelance or teaching in that area to make a living wage?

I'm setting the over/under for the number of applicants at 49.5.

Do you have the over or the under???

Re: not a poll... ie. the only way to respond is with words.

I do this and make my students do this:

Play simple tunes by ear, without music, then transpose them to various keys.
I find this exercise to be one of the top confidence-builders in a student and a top factor in developing overall musicality.

Last week, a sixth-grader was thrilled when she ...

Re: Tuba Tuesday: Mahillion, “French Tuba”, C tuba, 6 pistons, ca.1955

Yes, UncleBeer it was indeed interesting. I started taking lessons from him in HS. When he found out I was an avid amateur radio operator and knew my way around tube-based gear, he allowed me to work with some of the equipment in the studio. I paid for lessons by working at the warehouse and ...

Re: Tuba Tuesday: Mahillion, “French Tuba”, C tuba, 6 pistons, ca.1955

When I was working for Walter Sear in 1968 through 1970, a few of these passed through his then-warehouse and office at 784 6th Avenue in NYC.

People actually bought them.

In my capacity as part-time unboxer of shipments and remover of packing peanuts from instruments, I had the chance to play a ...
