Re: Are you using your F tuba to play anything other than gypsy violin solos these days?

I was playing a contrabass in a normal wind ensemble, but lately I’m playing trombone with that group, just for the fun of doing something different (and the last concert was all star wars, so that was fun for trombone).

On a certain Bach 42?

Yes, indeed! Thank you. It’s a great trombone ...

Re: Are you using your F tuba to play anything other than gypsy violin solos these days?

I’m completely amateur/hobbyist, but all of my public playing the past 6 months has been on F. It’s great for brass band, and mine is so easy to play that it must be almost as nice as bloke’s.

Oh no. Should I trade my B&S 103 for a BBb 186?

A friend working on a DMA teaches private lessons for high school kids. He’s now using a piston F at tuba and euphonium lessons, claiming it’s close enough to both and much more convenient than bringing two.

The 188 was just a flash in the pan, not as classic as the 186 and superseded (in desirability) by newer models?

Re: Chinese 188 clone?

With current tariffs, could they sell, in the U.S., a real 188 (from Germany) as cheaply as a clone?

unrelated: the 188 is still quite a nice looking tuba

Re: "I don't like pistons/rotors."

Rotary tubas require a long, narrow "slot" in the bugle to install a stack of rotors (with access to the rear caps). Therefore, most older rotary horns are designed with bugles that are tall and narrow.

FA piston tubas have the entrance to the valves very close to the player's face, with the ...

I’d have already got Wade’s amazing 186 if I didn’t already have a great early 188 that I’d have to get rid of.

Re: For sale: B&S Goldbrass Baritone

How is this still here?!

I sorted out my trombone situation (thanks to some nice folks here), and I already have F and BBb Symphonie sizes, so … maybe I’ll wait just a little longer to give a chance to someone who really needs it.

Seriously, for anyone in North America interested in this ...

Re: Where to try out new Tubas?

I liked the Gnagey a lot when I tried it at NABBA last spring. One thing that stood out about all the Wessex tubas was that they were a lot heavier than I’m used to. Very sturdy feeling.

On the other hand, my pair of forty year old East German tubas come pretty close to being right on.

Re: Trombone doubler question: flat 5th partials?

Just as with tubas, there are models of trombones whereby pitches behave themselves more nicely within positions and fewer micro-positions are required by their players. I've talked to quite a few trombone players about this stuff, and - to a man - they all agree that it's tremendously more easy ...
