Re: Any experience with Wilson 3400 5V Eb?
I’ve owned 3 3400’s. Two silver, one lacquer. One of the silver I liked better than the other. It was in better shape and had been better cared for before I owned it. I own the lacquer one right now (I’ve actually never seen another lacquer one in person). I like it the best of all three (it’s also ...

Re: Miraphone 4v CC w/ case (Mighty Quinn/eBay)
Acid bleed won’t show for quite awhile. Brass instruments from many makers exhibit it. It’s from a bit of random soldering flux that hides out on the instrument at joints and slowly creeps out under the lacquer causing oxidation.
Joe points out good info above, too.

I think that’s acid bleed from assembly soldering.

Re: Is Tubenet busted?
I left that place some time before all the weird went down. I mostly left because I really didn’t get the dynamic and, being quite ill for a good portion of my involvement, it was mostly from own lack of perception and perspective. What I do get now is that some really nice, even handed and helpful ...

Some of these were nice little tubas. That low hanging main slide is a bit tough.

The best ones are made out of “pure brass.”

Re: What did you play today?
It takes a special person to navigate a band full of “band directors.” As a yoot I played in a band with such a person at the helm. I really value that experience. He was the best.

I warmed up on BBb yesterday with the typical scales, intervals, articulation, etc. My plan is to do the same today.

Re: Why should or shouldn’t I renew my ITEA membership?
In nonprofits, executive directors are typically employees that are direct reports to the president and/or the board of directors of the organization. Typically, the executive director doesn’t have independent decision making powers over policy matters, only day to day operations.

Some nervous school band directors never grow out of their nervousness.
Board members like to show how important they are to captive (notice I didn’t say captivated) audiences.

This group, being a fairly active “community,” may be able to provide them valuable input, wanted or not, on how they’re doing.
Although, maybe they’ll always have sufficient numbers of new tuba majors to stay afloat. Or not. Foresight doesn’t seem to be a concern these days.

Re: Martin Eb 4V - Repair or replace
To be honest, I’d have the valves rebuilt. If you’ve owned this thing for as long as in your signature, I think you owe that horn some love. You can’t find anything really like it anymore.
That said, getting into a modern Eb may not be the worst idea - They’ll likely be more in-tune. If it were ...

Sooooo, I went to school with Kenny (not for “repair…”).
He apprenticed with Kevin Powers, formerly of Custom Music and a place called Royal Music Center (was owned by Herb Couf…) which is where I think Kenny and Kevin worked together.
