The other left! :tuba:
Right!
I have always been notoriously bad with left and right. Thank you both so much for straightening all that out.
Visited an early bronze age copper mine today, that was only discovered in 1987 or so. Think limestone riddled with miles of tunnels dug by hand ...

Re: Any experience with Wilson 3400 5V Eb?
I have the 3400S-FA5 in lacquer which is the Gabriel Capet Eb and the one they seem to have currently at Quinn.
Has a lovely singing tone up high. This and its intonation and compact size are what sold me on it. It is a little brighter than the Norwegian Star.

Re: Mister Tuba in Wales?
Thanks for your reply. My wife and I are sortof working our way around Wales going anti-clockwise, starting in Conwy (there now), then Portmerion, Brecon, then somewhere around Carleon and back home through London. We had a delightful drive over from Wolverhampton today, mostly on back roads.

Mister Tuba in Wales?
I happen to be visiting Wales in the UK next week. I am thinking about contacting Mister Tuba and seeing if I can visit. Can anyone here tell me anything about them?
Thanks!
Eric

Neat horn. Looks like that strap ring has quite a bit of wear. Any fun stories with this horn?

Re: Kanstul 33S
I have a Willson compact Eb that took most of the main tuning slide to get it in tune. That it has a way huge receiver and all I had were American shank mouthpieces didn’t help, but it was way more than that. I visited a couple of other folks locally who confirmed that it wasn’t just me and that it ...

Re: Willson 3400S-FA5 Valve Thread Size?
For a one off job.. I would just use a triangular jewelers file to chase the threads.
That had crossed my mind also, but if someone local has the right mandrel it might come out a little better.
The other thing I could do is just email and ask them - duh! I sent them a question about ...

Willson 3400S-FA5 Valve Thread Size?
I have the above horn. One of the valve casings feels to have a little thread damage, so thinking to see if someone local has a die or mandrel to chase it. Anyone know what size it might be? Pitch is around 32 tpi or 0.8mm, and major diameter is 1.21” or a skosh under 31mm. Assume it is something ...

Re: Where to try out new Tubas?
Went to TMEA for the first time last year and was totally amazed. Just about everything I could imagine was there, except for the Miraphone 494 Hagen. So I definitely second the suggestion.

Re: Guitar question
If you're interested in "instant pickup", those round stick-ons aren't terrible.
Think most of the stickons, and some of the built-in ones, are passive piezo electric pickups. Depending on what you are plugging into you may need a preamp. Basically whatever you are plugging into will need to ...

Re: Guitar question
But I imagine feedback isn't at the top of the issues around amplifying a 12 string.
It depends on the stage and venue volume. There’s totally a feedback loop present from speaker to air to guitar top to stings with either kindof pickup. Most of our shows we do our own sound and keep our volume ...

Re: Guitar question
I have a Martin D-16 that I had a Fishman under-saddle piezoelectric pickup installed in years ago. I gig with it about once a month and it’s been no trouble at all. It is active and takes a 9V battery which I replace about once a year. I think they give more of an acoustic guitar sound than the ...

Re: Tuba Intonation - Rant
I think it would be better to extend the mouth pipe and put a tune any note slide where the first slide is typically located. Additionally, it would be luxurious to have it self-centering with a spring system such as Reynolds used to install on the first slides of their tubas.
Control system ...

Re: Deeper look at mouthpieces
I like your suggestion to measure volume.
The other depth-like measurement that comes to mind might be to measure the depth to perhaps 50% of the i.d. of the rim. Which along with your depth to the throat diameter sortof gives a measure of the cup shape.
Fun stuff.

Re: Cronkhite or Messina?
I’m in the process of getting a bag from Cronkhite for my Willson 3400S-FA5 (their compact Eb). As in your case they didn’t have a pattern for it, so I made all their measurements and sent them in. They replied saying the dimensions were really close to a Kanstul 902/5C, which fits in the bag made ...

Re: Cronkhite or Messina?
Title says it all. I’ve decided that the only way I’m going to get a gig bag that fits my Kanstul 902-3B correctly is to have one custom made. A Messina or a Cronkhite would be approximately the same money. Which would you choose, and why? Especially valuable would be opinions of folks who have ...

Re: Wick mouthpieces
Plating, as I understand it, is not difficult on something like a mouthpiece. I used to know Tom Greer (RIP) who made Moosewood horn mouthpieces. Once when I was at his house, he was silver plating one and had it suspended in a glass of water, maybe with a silver rod and hooked to a D battery or ...

Re: Tuba-Shipping Tips?
Based on size, Grand Wardrobe box. Box-in-a-box if you can manage it.
I just got a horn shipped to my by the Mighty Quinn folks, and that is exactly how it came. Tuba was in a heavy plastic bag, wrapped in bubble wrap, and placed in a box slightly bigger than it was. Then all that was placed in ...
